Second quiz try hangs on results slide

Jan 21, 2019

I am having issues with a quiz-only project hanging when showing the results slide after a second attempt on the same quiz. Many thanks, in advance, for insights on how to fix this!

---

Project: Six 20-question tests, each drawn from a bank of 50 questions. Learner must score a pass on each test, and receives unlimited tries to do so. Scores are recorded manually; no LMS interaction needed. (Developed in Storyline 360.)

Issue: On the first try, a fail correctly shows the failure layer. Clicking on the "Retry Test" button restarts the test as expected. At the end of the second test session, where the results slide should pop up, the spinning loader wheel runs endlessly. This occurs regardless of the pass/fail results on the second try.

Tried the following and retested via FTP upload, but these revisions have not fixed the problem or (detectably) changed anything:

  • I've reset the results slide to reset to initial state.
  • I've moved "Submit results [Test_01_Results] When timeline starts" to top of the stack of results slide triggers.
  • Tested in both Chrome and IE11.

Here are some screenshots...

What I see instead of the second attempt results (that is, not much):

Results base layer:

Failure layer:

Hello again FS,

We corrected the issue that Jill referenced above, which was specific to course development and adding a trigger.

It sounds like your issue is specific to course playback, which is a bit different.

Is your quiz in a question bank?

With your permission, I'd like to take a look at your project file to investigate what's happening. You can share it publicly here, or send it to me privately by uploading it here. I'll delete it when I'm done troubleshooting.

Hi M,

What update of Storyline 360 are you using? I looked at FS's case and saw that the issue they ran into was how Storyline Update 23's published output is freezing when retrying quiz from question bank only on Google Chrome. If that matches your setup, I can add your info to our report, and in the meantime, you can roll back to Update 22 or instruct learners to use a different browser.

If your situation is a bit different than I described, we'd love to take a look at your files, with your permission. You can share it publicly here, or send it to me privately by uploading it here.

I’ll delete it when I’m done troubleshooting.

Ashley - I'll upload later this evening.

I had just updated Storyline 360 to the latest version before starting the new project. I was getting freezing in Chrome and also just when previewing through Storyline.

I didn't test on any other browsers.

I'm on a different machine right now with the previous version of Storyline, and everything works as expected.

Thanks for the followup.

Hello all, just to confirm, I got the same problem today: impossible to redo quiz more than one time. I did the downgrade to the November version, and now my quiz works perfectly.

Just to add more informations, in order to resolve this issue, it seems that the problem appears when drawing questions from a bank. When I disable the random selection I haven't the issue.

Actually I tried this and it still didn't work. I had to upgrade to the latest version again and first remove the checkmark to only retry wrong answers in the "reset result" trigger. Somehow the older version couldn't ignore this even the feature isn't there. After removing the checkmark in the trigger, saving the file, downgrading SL360 to the November Update again and reopening the file it workes in preview.

This really gave me a bit of a headache figuring out why it didn't work after the first downgrading. xD Working with a questionbank btw and had problems with resetting the questions after the first downgrade too. It really is kind of weird.

Wow, that does raise the scary bar on this issue a bit! So many problems to sort out, Susi!!

I am crossing my fingers this gets fully resolved before my client asks for final delivery of their super-duper testing project: 300 questions distributed (via six finicky test banks) into six separate quizzes, each with unlimited retries until passed.

Hi Susi,

I'd love to take a look at it privately, as it does sound similar to an issue that popped up in Update 23 where a course freezes in Chrome when retrying the quiz from a question bank, after first failing the quiz. Since you're also seeing the freeze in Preview and IE11, it may be different, but testing will help us confirm!

You can send it to me privately by uploading it here.

I’ll delete it when I’m done troubleshooting.
