Seek bar longer than inserted videos

Nov 29, 2017

I have an sl3 (latest build as of post date) asset which almost entirely made of blank slides with video's inserted atop them.  The videos are local mp4's of reasonable file size and length.

On some of them, the relationship between the seek bar and the video is tenuous.   Sometimes the video is half the length of the seek bar, and if students "scrub" the video will restart in the bar.    It's a prety lousy UE.  There is nothing remotely fancy about anything we're doing.

Any tips /workarounds.  would be helpful.

Hi Mike,

If I am understanding you correctly, you may just want to adjust the timeline on each slide to match the length of the video, as the seekbar is as long as the timeline.

That said, I wonder whether you should just remove the seekbar? If the video has its own, you probably don't need the player one?

Good luck!

I figured it out.  Because the modules all had different lengths of videos, I had been doing a bit of copy and paste to quicken the pace.  Apparently, once media is attached to a slide, that becomes the length of the slide, even after you delete that media.  One of my source slides that was getting used as a "blank" had a length of like 20 minutes, so even long after the 20 minute video had been deleted, that became the length of the seek bar.

I'd pop a 5 minute video onto that slide, and assume that was the length of the slide.  wrong.  And that's why things got weird.

Spent the evening creating new blank slides and copying the videos onto them instead.  Fixed the issue.  Lot faster than dragging the slide length from 20 minutes down to the video length.

Sorry it caused you such trouble Mike, but you're spot on! When you add any media elements to a slide we automatically move the timeline out to match it - but when you delete it, we don't readjust the timeline in case there are any other timing elements that would be impacted.

I also know a lot of users have shared that the method here works for them.

I think I am having a similar issues here. I have videos of various lengths on individual slides. I have the slides set to end right at the point that the videos end. When I go to preview the slides, the videos plays and ends, but there is extra time remaining on the seek bar (this is also preventing the slides from automatically progressing until the seek bar reaches its end).

Not sure what I can do here!

UPDATE: I brought my sample video over to a new project to test. When the project is set at the Default Story Size the video is playing, the seek bar is matching and everything is working as should be. However, when I change the Story Size to my preferred 1280x720, I am getting the same issue as before (the video plays through but there is reaming "dead time" left on the player seek bar, delaying the progression to the next slide).

What the heck is going on here?

Hi Casey,

Thanks for reaching out and sharing those details! I find it odd that changing the story size affects your timeline when a video is part of the slide!

I've opened a case on your behalf to connect you with a support engineer to help you figure out what is happening behind the scenes here.

You should be receiving an email with a link to upload your .story file. We'll get notified immediately to begin testing and reach back out with our results!

Hi,I have a similar problem. I inserted a video on a slide, and the timeline shows the correct length of the video. However, when I preview the slide, the seekbar shows a different time of the video.
I copied the slides from a previous course and just exchanged the videos. I guess this is the reason why the length is not shown correctly; however, it's not really an option for me to recreate every single slide.

Is there anything I can do? Why is the seekbar not automatically updating?

Hi Nathalie,

Sorry to hear that you ran into this snag. I did a quick test on my end using a slide with a video but I was unable to get the slide timeline to different from the video length. Would you be willing to share a copy of your project file here or in private by opening a support case so we can take a closer look at what's happening? We'll delete it when we're done testing!
