Seekbar behaving badly in interactive video

Mar 07, 2016

I know the seekbar has issues, but this is different than other postings I've seen. Bear with me.

There are multiple-choice questions in my video. At each one, options display and the video pauses just before the answer is revealed. The learner chooses an option and video resumes. This works perfectly. I run into trouble when the learner clicks ahead (to the right) on the seekbar. Suddenly rogue options appear, untriggered, and mess up the whole experience.

Making the seekbar read-only defeats the purpose of allowing my adult learners to control the amount of time spent on their education. I would love to understand why the option layers are appearing when they are not wanted. Does anyone know how I can prevent this from happening without making production ridiculously complex? I have to make a lot of these.

When you launch my attached story, choose the top option to pause at questions. Then click the seekbar at about the red triangle and wait for the option to appear and the video to pause so you can see how the questions and options work. Very simple. Then click somewhere randomly way to the right on the seekbar. Where did those options come from?

Hi, Laura -- Thanks so much for reaching out, and so sorry to hear of your difficulties! I intend to test your file as soon as possible to see if I am able to reproduce the error you are reporting, but in the meantime, may I ask if you are finding the same when you test your published course where it will ultimately "live" or be accessed?

As the linked article states, "If you view an Articulate Storyline course on your local hard drive (or send it to someone else to view on their local hard drive), you'll encounter security restrictions from the computer, web browser, Flash Player, and network that'll cause various features of your content to fail."

Please let us know, and I'll be in touch with my findings! :)

I am creating and previewing my story files on my local drive but the course will ultimately be uploaded to a server and called via a link. I've never encountered any errors or restrictions that keep me from previewing successfully on my local.

I think I may have solved the problem with your tech support's help. Unfortunately, it required a workaround that will take extra time and effort in producing these courses. The issue is that wherever you click ahead on the seekbar, the trigger tied to the most recent cue point will fire. So I was getting layers showing up when I didn't want them. I've added another cue point very soon after the one that displays the options to the base layer. This second cue point hides the layer that most recently displayed. That way, the trigger tied to the most recent cue point is a hide and not a show.

It seems to be working now but requires more testing. If anyone else out there has a better, faster, easier way to resolve this I would love to hear it!

This firing of triggers when they aren't wanted via the seekbar is a bug that the development team should be aware of.

Thank you so much for sharing an update, and I see that you are working with our Support Engineer, John, on your case #00718965. I will be sure to follow along with the progress being made on your case, and will share relevant updates here in the thread for others who may benefit. And, perhaps others will have some additional insights they can share, as well! :)
