This is by design, in response to user complaints about content continuing to play on one browser tab while the user is interacting with content on another browser tab. Now, the browser automatically pauses playing media when that tab loses focus.
If you really want a course to continue running while you're doing something else (must be a REALLY boring course), open it in a new window, not a new tab.
