Set triggers on successful completion

I'm working on a module where I want layers on a central slide to be "unlocked" or triggered based on successful completion of quiz slides. I have tried tying a variable to the "continue" button on the "correct" layer of the quiz slide. So that the variable "Q1complete=true" when the user presses continue. I then set a trigger for the layer on the main slide show when the variable "Q1complete=true" but it is not working. The quiz slides are lightboxed, I don't know if that makes any difference. 

I also tried setting a checkbox off stage on the main slide to be triggered when the variable q1complete equals true, and have the check box trigger the slide layers but none of the triggers that I've set based on the variable change seem to be working.
