On the basis that I have to drag it to the correct length, rather than just setting "Slide Length" (or something), I would personally like to thank my installation of Storyline for randomly setting this slide-length and wasting my life!
I had a similar problem where the timeline length automatically extended to 3,000 seconds even though the layers were 10 seconds long! I didn't want to manually drag the end of the timeline back to 30 seconds so here's what I did to "solve" the issue:
Create a new layer on the problematic slide which has the extended timeline (Note: creating a new layer will default the timeline slide to 5 seconds)
Copy the original layer items (i.e. hold SHIFT on your keyboard and select all the components on your timeline)
Paste the items in your new layer
Adjust the timeline end to your liking by dragging to the left
I like this option more than starting from scratch!

Hi Bruce
I think they have implemented the 'Java randomizer'
Geert
Turns out that a corrupt (?) 8-second audio file is causing this, but that "Undo" will not reset the timeline length
So - off to build the slide from scratch AGAIN.....

Hope that helps!
This issue is a serious pain in the butt, really think it time this was sorted out
Yeah, this just happened to me and gave me a 20,000-second long slide.
