Setting the Number of Attempts for a Course/Assessment

Mar 12, 2013

Dear team,

Thanks for your continous support

I have built a course on Articulate storyline, but  i need to set the number of attempts in such a way that the user gets to retry the quiz 3 times at the end of the assessment only.

Current settings to set the number of attempts when you select "edit the multiple choice" will enable the user to answer the question 3 times at the same time. (which we do not want)

Please advise how to set the number of attempts to the entire assessment and not for every question.

Looking forward for your response

Thanks & Regards

Thanuja

Hello,

One way to do this is to use variables and count retake attempts.

  • Make a Number variable (retake) and set it to 0
  • Add a trigger on the result slide which adds 1 to the retake variable every time the user gets to that slide
  • Show layer Failure (with a button to let the user retake the quiz) when timeline starts if retake is less than or equal to 3

Hope this can help you

Hi Jannicke,

Thank you for your response.

Could you explain in detail for the below instructions, as i m still a beginner in using this product.

  • Make a Number variable (retake) and set it to 0 - how do i do this ?
  • Add a trigger on the result slide which adds 1 to the retake variable every time the user gets to that slide
  • Show layer Failure (with a button to let the user retake the quiz) when timeline starts if retake is less than or equal to 3
  • I am looking forward for your response so i can try your advise to complete the assessment.

Please assist & thank you very much

    Hi Jannicke,

Thank you for your reply, the quiz really helped me a lot to understand and work with variables.

I  managed to set evrything up, but i am stuck at the stage where the user runs through the course for the 3 rd time and doesnt see the Failure 1 Layer !!  that says u did not pass the test for the 3 rd time.

Please have a look at the snapshot below , if it can help you figure out why i m not seeing the failure 1 layer after i fail for the 3 rd time ?

Whats happening now is , the attempts are getting unlimited and not stopping after 3 rd time of failure.

However i have choose Resultsscorepercentage and Resultspasspercentage everywhere as this assessment is set by percentage to pass.

Please assist me  & thanks again

    It looks correct to me...

What is your result slide set to; resume to initial state, automatically decide or resume saved state?

Thinking...; you don't reset your variable Retake any place? You only reset results, correct?

Will think about it and let you know if I can think of anything else that is making it not to work

    Hi Jannicke,

All the settings of my slide layers are set to " AUTOMATICALLY DECIDE " , what do you suggest i should set it to ? to make sure  i see the Failure layer 1  on my 3rd attempt.

And i have not set any  trigger to reset my variable retake in any place.

And yes i have set a trigger to reset results when they click "REPEAT TEST"

Please assist me , waiting for your reply to complete my task.

    Thanks much

    Hi  Jannicke,

if you look at the snapshots below, My first slide is the name of the course and then I have Questions in the " Draw from question banks" and then the Result slide.

I get the slide properties to choose on the First slide and then on the result slide, i have taken a snapshot to show you how it is set up.

I see on your sample 'Quiz Retake" you have set the Slide Properties to "reset to initial state" and you have choosen "Result slide"

In my case, i dont see any slide properties when i select the my Questions  which is on the "Draw from question banks "(2 nd one in the pic)

And  either of the SLide Properties if i choose "reset to intiital state" and check the submit button i dont get the option to choose the "result slide" (like the way you have done it )

    Jannicke Wilhelmsen

You don't see the "result slide" because your questions are in a question bank. In most of my projects I have my questions in question banks, and it makes no difference. To see any properties on your questions you have to double-click the question bank and select each question in the bank to see properties.

I have usually my slides set to "reset to initial state", so when revisiting the sound is played again and the questions are set to their initial state.

I am very sorry, but I don't know how to help you more. I can try and look at your file, but I understand if it is confidential and you can't share it. But I think that is the only way I can try and look at it to see what is not working.

I can send you a private message with my e-mail, and you can do it if you like.

    Hi Jannicke,

I managed to get the assessment attempts just the way you have done it , by simply taking out all my questions from the "draw from question Bank" and making it like slides with questions and i was able to see the result slide to set this on the question slide properties., so the attempt part has been sorted out successfully. Thank you so much.

I now have another question/request to see if the following is possible on my course.

    1. To ensure the learner's takes only the questions they have answered wrong when they click "repeat Test" instead of doing all questions in their  2 nd & 3 rd attempt  , is this possible , can i set this up using variables ?

Please assit me, thanks again !!

    Hi Thanuja,

It's pretty laborious, but Jeanette put together a demo that does essentially what you're hoping for. Have a look and see if it's something that might help you.

    Good luck!

    Hi Jannicke/Peter,

    Thank you guys !

I went through the sample slides which allows you to take the assessment on the wrong questions, but however i see it was a true/false question & variable that was used, i was wondering how will the same logic apply to a text Variable & also if you have chosen the answers to shuffle

Please find the attached sample , which is the exact proto type of the actual assessment i am working on.

I have set the 3 X attempts criteria to pass with 100% and answers shuffle, & while revisiting it's set to "resume saved state" , with all this i have set i now need to make sure i  keep the same settings and to add the below change

    1. allow the user to retake  only the slides which has the wrong answers chosen.

    2. And also show the user & passing score at the end of every attempt as of now it shows only on the last attempt.

    Please assist me,

    Looking forward for your response

    Thanks again

There was a response to this above:  (Peter Anderson)

This is exactly what I am trying to create - can someone send me this in SL view so I can look at the variables and triggers instead of just the player ?

    Thank you!!!
