Shapes to highlight and later be a trigger

Mar 15, 2017

Hi I am very new to Storyline360  and am currently updating someone else's older versions of storyline.  In doing so I have attempted improve just a little by using shapes that pop up on the screen to highlight sections of the application - to line up with the pre-existing Audio  - which works well. The problem is that one of the Shapes is replaced later in the time line with another shape that is supposed to be selected to trigger the next slide. It seems that I can't have 2 shapes that are at the same location even though the time lines specify they appear at different times. I have tried changing time lines and bringing the separate shapes to back and front,  but I can't seem to solve this. Any ideas

Are you wanting two identical shapes to be visible at the same place at the same time? In that case, you can get by using only one. Attach the trigger to it, and cover it with an invisible shape (one with a fill set to 100% transparent) that disappears when the trigger is supposed to become active.

Do you want two different shapes at the same place at the same time? Make the one in the back larger, or shaped differently, and the user can click on the part that sticks out, or place  the one with the trigger in front.

Do you want two shapes (identical or not) that appear at different times? Make the first one disappear before the second appears.

I do all of these all the time, so I know they will work. If they don't, attach your .story file here, and someone can take a look at it.

HI Walt,

Thanks for the update and advice - really appreciated.

The 2 shapes are focusing on the same point the first is larger as it is highlighting a section of a web page, the second shape was to appear above a specific button in that section and act as a trigger this one is smaller than the other and sits within the first shape.

I had each only visible during separate parts of the timeline so when previewing the trigger didn't work.

I did however solve it by replacing the the trigger shape with a transparent button that sat over the actual field that was to trigger and now the slide changes.

Best Regards
