Show layer on mouse over not working (from another layer)

Hi everyone - I'm ready to throw my laptop out the window! Please save my laptop from certain destruction
I have attached the file for you to see. I have a layer where I want the learner to be able to mouse over a term and the definition will appear in a caption. The caption is on another layer. I have this working on other slides, but the term is on the base layer. For some reason this is not working layer to layer. I've read all the other posts about this and checked to make sure I wasn't doing the same thing as others. It appears as though everything is set up correctly, but it still doesn't work. I really hope I've just been looking at it too long and someone else will see the error!
Thank you so much!

Probably better to use a hotspots, may have something to do with the animation.
I would simply add the definition caption as the rollover state of a transparent shape and add it to the layer itself. This way, you avoid having to jump between layers altogether. See attached.
Hi Carrie
Applying certain triggers to text boxes tends not to work. Images and shapes are what's needed. I either save bits of text as an image (and insert it in place of the text) or I add a 99% transparent shape on top of the text.
Thank you Phil and Michael! I can't believe I didn't think of just changing states - much easier!
Thanks Carrie for the update and I'm glad Phil and Michael were able to assist you here!
