Single audio file playing through multiple layers

Jun 25, 2020

I am working on a project to show learners how to navigate through call center software while they are helping a caller. I have screen captures set up in multiple layers on any given slide. A single audio file of the phone call plays on the Base layer as they interact with the simulated software at their own pace. When the last layer has been interacted with, I need to control the user's access to the next screen based on whether or not the audio has completed.

I tried many ways and finally got a solution that works beautifully in SL previews, but when I publish it, it is very inconsistent at best. Because this is private software, I cannot share the files, but what I did--the way that DOESN'T work--is:

  • Layer BASE has long-playing audio with a T/F variable set to False. This (AudioDone) variable changes to True when the Audio Completes.
  • Layers 1-6 are interacted with at learner's own pace. On Layer 6, the final Hotspot has 2 triggers: Either Jump to next slide if AudioDone variable = True or Show Mock Layer 6 if AudioDone = False.
  • Mock Layer 6 will Jump to next slide when AudioDone variable changes.

So I know between 1-100 ways that don't work. Please, someone tell me what does!

Hi Joanne,

Thanks for contacting us and sharing what you are working on.

I created a sample file based on the setup that I understand you'd like to create. Let me know if this works well for you.

If you need me to take a look privately, then with your permission, upload it here. I'll delete it when I'm done troubleshooting.

Thanks for this, Leslie! Your example worked differently than what I
needed, but you got me thinking in the "right" direction which *I
believe *fixed
the issue! Unfortunately, I haven't been able to verify that in the context
of the whole course because I am being stumped by a screen that occurs just
before the interaction I first asked about. I've attached it here. As I
mentioned before, it's a software simulation training, and the learner goes
through a series of clicks at their own pace while a customer audio plays.
The attached file works beautifully in Preview mode, but not when Published
to the Review site. The issue is here: towards the end of the interaction
the learner pastes a name into a text entry field (by pressing *Ctrl *+* V*)
and then pressing *Enter *to go to the next screen, but when posted for
Review I cannot get the pasted name to appear, so the interaction grinds to
a halt. I've tried it many different ways, but I'm still stumped and I
don't know why Preview works but Publish doesn't! Please advise.

...And thank you so much for your help!!!
