I have a sound effect I'm using whenever a certain button appears in my course (in Storyline 3). Is there a "single-source" trick, where I can just reference the embedded sound on any slide, or do I have to put a copy of the sound file on every single slide this button's on (and if I want to change it, change every copy of that sound)?
I'm not sure if that will work for my purposes - these slides by necessity are a screencast. Could I still apply a layout on slides where I recorded my screen?
Edit: I Just tested this on my feedback slides, where I do have a sound that's embedded in the layout (a correct ding that plays when it pops up). Buttons cannot access sounds in the layout.
I did try that but kept getting the incorrect layer display and the sound doesn't play - can you check the attached rough sample and see what I'm doing wrong.
Ah yes, you're right. If the learner is required to click something to hear the sound, that will interfere with the Try Mode/Test Mode slide functionality.
So StatEase, I'd like to know a little more about your file:
Are you using View Mode, Try Mode, or Test Mode steps?
Are the learners required to click a button for the sound to play, or should it play automatically?
If you have a sample file you can share with us, we're happy to take a look!
So I realize I misspoke - it's not a button, it's a caption that's appearing in conjunction with a sound.
I'm using Try Mode, but I edited the slide (Storyline's not very good at capturing exactly what I'm trying to do in our complex statistics software). I don't have any screencast animation; the screencast is basically just a background for the captions.
I've attached a file that shows a good one-slide sample of what I'm trying to do.
I guess my triggers didn't copy over. The "tutorial woosh" sound is supposed to play whenever a caption's timeline begins.
Again, I don't know if using a Slide Master is the right way to do this, because as I said above, I tested this. My Feedback master has an embedded sound, which plays when the layer pops up, and I was unable to add that sound file to any trigger when I added items to the Feedback master.
I'd agree that using a Slide Master may not be the best option here. Instead, try adding the audio file into the "Normal" state of the caption.
Then, you can copy/paste the caption each time you need to reuse it, and the audio will automatically copy with the object.
I've created a sample file to show you how this would work. When you open this file, click on one of the captions, and click States. Then, click Edit States, and you'll see the audio file to the left of the slide in the "Normal" state. Each time you copy/paste that caption, the audio will copy along with it.
Give that a try in your own file, and let me know if you'd like some help along the way!
I understand what you're getting at, but that doesn't have any advantage over what I'm currently doing. If I wanted to change the "caption sound" for the course, I'd have to go through each and every caption and change the audio file - which is way more work than changing each and every audio file on a slide with captions.
If this isn't doable, then it isn't doable. Maybe submit it as a feature request, to have some "course sounds" that we can add to the player and reference as needed.
I hear you, and that makes sense. Our product team is always keen to hear about customer needs, so I can certainly pass along your idea. And feel free to share any other ideas you have here: Feature Request Form.
Can you add it to a slide master and set it to play when a variable changes on the master, then on you buttons add a trigger to increment the variable?
I tried inserting the sound onto the master and adjusting the variable as suggested, but it didn't play. Again, I think this is related to the screencast - you can play with my file uploaded above to see if you can get it to work.
I added the audio to the master with trigger to play when variable changes. Then on the screencast slide added triggers to adjust the variable by 1 when the timeline of each caption starts - I can see the variable changing but the audio is not playing...interested to know what I doing wrong.

Could you create a master slide layout that has that button on it with the sound - then apply that layout to the slides where you want that button?
Here is a rough sample

No it won't because the screencast takes up the whole slide - sorry you didn't mention that in your initial post.
Hi StatEase,
Could you place the button on a master slide layer, then trigger the layer to open when the timeline starts?
As long as the button is on a master slide layer, it should appear on top of the screen recording background image.

I've got your file open here, and I'm seeing a number of captions and audio files on the slide. Can you help me with a few more details?

This way you can only change one audio file.
That might be a doable workaround, if I can add sounds to screencast masters. Not sure I can, per Wendy's comment, but I'll give it a shot.
It should work, I can mock something up tomorrow if you cannot get it to work

It should have worked, but another of those oddities for why it hasn't worked.
I added to a layer instead to the slide master and that works.
I have two triggers one to close the layer, just to make sure it is closed before you show it.
