SL inputs/outputs

Of course, Storyline can accept input from external devices - usually a mouse and keyboard. It can output to a screen and speakers. However, I'm curious about whether it can communicate with other computer applications. I don't know Javascript, but that seem like a reasonable channel. Would that work or is there some other protocol that enable other inputs and outputs. Perhaps some of you technical gurus can enlighten me.
