Ideally I'd like the colours to be different shades of the same colour but its clear to the user where the stops are because its the border between 2 colour changes.
I guess what I'm asking is there a way to control the amount of diffusion between the stops so I can have a crisper border between stops
You can fiddle around with the stops of a gradient fill, but that won't be pixel perfect. You could create a bitmap with the precise gradients and use that as a track fill or make the track fill transparent and place that bitmap behind the slider
Hi, Michael! Looks like you are receiving lots of great input here, but if you had something else in mind, it might be helpful if you were able to share a sample file, as well. :)

Ya I was thinking the image based fill might be the way to go
You create an image and then use that as the fill for the track.
Any easy way to know the dimensions my image needs to be?
You can select a slider and view its width on the Design tab. To get the exact height for the track will take some trial-and-error.
Here is a method to reveal the fill as the slider moves, and as Michael says, lots to T&E.
This is a work still in progress, so there will be things there you don't need, but slide 2 is the one you want.
