SL3 -- Custom Nav built, but disabled nav buttons show up when going back over the questions - Fixed in SL3?

May 08, 2017

From looking at other discussions, it looks like if we build our own custom navigation (back, next, submit) we can not prevent SL's prebuilt nav of prev&back upon revisiting of questions slide. Meaning, these buttons show up even if disabled if we go 'back' after answering the question.

Has this issue been taken care of in SL3 or do I need to find a work around?

Hi Lamma,

That's correct! When learners review a quiz (or revisit question slides they've already submitted), they'll see Articulate Storyline's built-in Prev and Next buttons in the lower right corner of the player—even if you've disabled them throughout your course. These navigation buttons are necessary for learners to review quiz slides.

If you disable elements at the bottom of the player throughout the entire course, such as the seekbar, volume button, captions button, and navigation buttons, you will not see the Prev and Next buttons in the lower right corner during quiz review. Keep in mind you'll want to build custom navigation buttons to allow the learner to move forward.

Upon initial viewing of your response, it seems that the 2 paragraphs you wrote contradict each other. However, upon closer look this is what I am understanding - prev and next buttons will show up in 'quiz review' even if they are disabled UNLESS also for the entire storyline file all of the pages also do not have the prebuilt seek, vol, captions, and nav buttons. Is this is SL 3? Because I currently have SL 2 with all of the above conditions and these prev and next still show up upon review.

To clarify what 'quiz review' means, this is any time you have a question slide within a storyline file and the learner goes back to revisit this slide, correct?

I do not have all of my questions slides at the end. They are interspersed in the learning as well as having 5 questions at the end in what we are calling an activity. I need for these to not show up when the learner goes 'back' in all instances. Are you telling me I have the capability to do this in SL3 and not SL2?

Sorry for the confusion, Lamma! Take a look at this Storyline 3 example. In the first screenshot, the volume button is enabled, and you see the Prev and Next buttons in quiz review. When I removed the volume button, you do not see the Prev and Next buttons in quiz review

Storyline 3 with player elements (volume button):

Storyline 3 with no player elements:

The same is true for Storyline 2, except the Prev and Next buttons do appear in the HTML5 published output. There are some solutions for that issue in that linked forum thread.

And you are correct--quiz review means any time you go back to a quiz slide once the answer has been submitted.

I hope that helps clear things up, and please let me know if you have other questions!
