Slide audio not playing on ios devices (ipad/iphone)

Jul 27, 2012

Hey guys!

Been working on designing a new workflow which allows me to record slides and narration audio in MS PowerPoint, import into Articulate Presenter 09, and then import into Storyline. This actually provides the highest fidelity with animation conversions AND allows for anybody with PowerPoint to create slides/narrations.

My problem is when running the 4-slide demo course (attached), it seems that there is a problem with slide 2 and 4 audio. This only happens on iOS devices. I tested on my iPhone and on the iPad simulator (comes with Apple xcode). The audio played for the other slides, just not for slides 2 and 4.

The audio plays when using a standard desktop browser (chrome/firefox/ie8+/safari)

Is there something I'm missing?

Hi Scott,

I'd love to know if you made any progress on this issue. I published a Storyline course to HTML 5 and tested it on two iPhones. The audio plays fine on my iPhone 4S but does not play at all on a co-worker's iPhone 4. I will continue to test more devices.

I published a different course to the iPad a few weeks back and audio played fine on my computer with the Flash output, but was missing from 40% of the slides when played on my iPad 2 using HTML 5. I assume the iPad application will function better but I want to support more devices using HTML 5.

Any help understanding why this is happening is appreciated.

Hey Jon, welcome to Heroes!

Can you tell us a little more about how your audio is set up? Mobile Safari doesn't allow audio to play that is not initiated or triggered by the user. Therefore, slides set to advance automatically will not play audio or video in HTML5 output that is viewed in mobile Safari. This article has more info on that, if it's relevant to your course. Looking forward to hearing more...

Thank you for the response and link to resources.

My project has an audio file in each scene and is configured to advance to the next slide automatically. Per the article you sent this should not work consistently in the Safari browser:

Mobile Safari does not allow audio or video to play that is not initiated or triggered by the user. Therefore, slides set to advance automatically will not play audio or video in HTML5 output that is viewed in mobile Safari.

What's strange is that I have tested this extensively on two iPhones.

#1 is running iOS6 and the audio plays just fine as it auto-advances each slide. It functions and looks great.

#2 is running iOS 5.1.1 and I do not hear audio unless I manually advance the slide.

Have you heard reports of different versions of Safari treating HTML differently?

Is there a workaround, such as using the Trigger wizard, to automatically play the file when the timeline begins? It seems like this is something that should be addressed by Storyline, similar to the issue described here

I'll continue testing iOS 6 vs iOS 5 devices to see if this behavior is consistent to the OS. Any other suggestions welcome.

Jon
