Slide Layer Navigations in Storyline 2

Sep 19, 2014

I have converted an existing Storyline module to Storyline 2.  I have discovered that a slide layer navigation that worked in the original version does not work in Storyline 2.

For example, the slide only has one layer and conditions that will not allow the learner to move forward until the buttons ‘state’ is visited.  When I test in Storyline 2 in slide preview mode, the following error message appears—“The slide target of this link is not available in this preview.”  In full project view, the slide ‘skips’ the layer and moves directly to the next slide.

I have made no changes other than to convert to Storyline 2 and the triggers worked before.  Do you have any thoughts?

Many thanks,

Chris

Hi Emily,

Many thanks for your response.

I have attached the ‘Storyline’ file although I had alreadyconverted it to Storyline 2 so this is the backup file, which I just open withStoryline.

The issue is with slide 1.3 and the layer.

I do appreciate your help.

Kind regards,

Chris

Hello Chris,

The error, “The slide target of this link is not available in this preview" occurs in the view this slide only preview, since the next button is linked to the next slide. You wont get this error in full preview mode.

I took a look at your file, and was not able to get the next trigger to work in SL2.

I have attached a new file with a workaround of adding the layer as a new slide. You can also look here for information how to disable the next button until users interact within the slide.

Also there are some other threads you may want to look at that can give you ways to use variables to show layers.

Hi Emily,

Thanks very much for your response.  However, that still does not explain why the triggers work in Storyline (and in Storyline ‘slide view’ you can view the layer by clicking the ‘Next’ button) but they do not work in Storyline 2.  Moreover, the ‘Next button is linked to the layer and not the next slide.

The triggers, navigations and slide conditions are (exactly) the same in both versions but I still do not understand why the result is different.

I understand the ‘fix’  you have provided but unfortunately, I cannot open your new file attachment as I receive a ‘side-by-side configuration’ error message.

Thank you again for taking the time to investigate the issue for me.

Kind regards,

Chris

Hello Chris,

I have re saved the file to add for you to look at. Hopefully this one will open for you. Unfortunately with the set up you had, using the next button to open a layer first,  I was not able to recreate it to work in a new file in SL1 or SL2. It seems that when you add the conditions in, the next slide trigger works first, but if you leave the conditions off, the layer trigger works.

Hi Emily,

I really do appreciate your help.  Unfortunately, I still cannot open the second .zip file you attached—I am not sure why, but I am still getting the same error message, “The application failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect.  Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxtrace.exe tool for more detail.”

I will investigate further with my IT help desk.

Many thanks, once again, for all your help and insights.

Kind regards,

Chris
