Slide Master - Paragraph Settings - How do they work?

May 10, 2017

Hey there,

hoping you can help me. I am really confused about the Paragraph Settings in a slide master. What I am trying to achieve is this:
I created a layout in my master to have all the text styled in the same way. It ought to look like this: The titel needs to be in Arial 14pt and a special blue. The subheading (e.g. for a paragraph) should be Arial 12pt, darkgrey and bold. The continous text itself should be the same dark grey, 12 pt and not bold.
I would like to have the paragraph settings to be:

  • Heading: Line Spacing is set to Multiple 1.2 and After to 12pt
  • Subheading: Line Spacing Multiple 1.2, After 6pt
  • Text: Line Spacing Multiple 1.2, After 6pt; except for a bullet list ther the spacing should be 1.5

Is there a way to accomplish this? If I try and make the alternations to my "lorem ispsum text" it gets set back to Arial, black, 14 pt.
Isn't Storyline 360 able to have these different Settings in one textbox? It would be great if it could, because my project is a rather lage one with more than 10 module and appox. 1000 slides altogether...

Thank you for your help.

Hi Jessica,

What update of Storyline 360 are you using? We had an update early in 3.1 that fixed a known issue where paragraph settings were not being saved in a slide master and we're now on build 3.5. Here's a link to the Storyline version history.

Steps to update are here.

If you're still seeing an issue with slide master paragraph settings in the latest Storyline update - can you share a .story file? Can you take a Peek of the problem? You can include the "Share" link here in your reply!

Hi Ashley,

Storyline is on Build 3.5.11153.0 (funny, sice the link you posted referes to Build 3.4.10364.0 as recent Built).

I did a screencast with Peek, here is the link:

I'm sorry, the video isn't "fluent", Storyline was a bit lazy in opening new dialogs etc. ;)
As you see, the changes I alredy made vanish after chaning the paragraph settings for the subheading.

Thank you for your help.

Hi Jessica,

Thanks for the video - although it was a bit hard to follow, as I wasn't sure entirely if it was the paragraph setting or something else that was causing the issue. Have you looked at having the heading and the sub headings in different text fields?

Also for the Version history - here is how I see it listed:

Are you located outside of the US perhaps? I know our localized language pages can take a little longer to  update - but this seems a bit longer than I'd expect!

Hello Ashley,

I can't have the two headings in different text fields, because the length of the first heading isn't always the same and sometimes I don't need a subheading. And even if I had, there would still be the problem with the normal text...

Yes, I'm outside of the US and I looked at the german page.

Thank you for your help.

Hi Jessica,

I think what you are looking for are true paragraph styles like in MS Word or InDesign etc. These can operate independently from Master Pages but Storyline inexplicably doesn't support that feature.

Storyline 2 has other issues with formatting of text fields on Master Slides not being honored when applied to content slides. There has been a lot of discussion around this problem but it still has not been fixed in SL2.

Hi Jessica,

Sorry the German page didn't get updated as quickly with the listing of release notes. I'll get the team to double check that.

As for the slide master and paragraph settings that was something fixed in Storyline 360 and Storyline 3. So if you're still seeing the issue using either of those tools, we'd want to take a look at one of your .story files to see how it's behaving. Can you share it with us here or would you prefer to send along to our Support Engineers?
