Slide panel showing slides vertically or horizontally

Aug 18, 2017

I have just started using Storyline 2 recently and love it. I have an issue with the Scenes panel. Some of my stories have the Slides panel display the slides horizontally which, for me, is kind of a pain since the panel is vertical when docked. Other stories have the slides oriented vertically. How do I change this setting so that I have consistency when working across different projects? Thank you in advance.

Hi Michael,

The story view and slides panel display will be based on your triggers. So if Slide 1 is set to jump to slide 2, you'll see them shown vertically, and so on wrapping back up to the top similar to set of columns. Slides may appear horizontal to one another if they don't have connections to other slides via a trigger.

You can look for the small red arrow or a link icon that points from one slide to the next in the slide panel to know if there are triggers there:

If you're still unsure what you're seeing, can you share a copy of your .story file and I can point you in the right direction!

I figured out that the way we jump to the next slide is through a trigger in the slide master. The previous slide button is a trigger on the slide itself to jump to the specific slide before the current slide. We can't use 'previous' slide as that will move between the last two slides viewed (i.e. slide 9 is previous to slide 10, but then slide 10 is the slide viewed just before slide 9.) Even though there is a trigger to go to a specific slide, it still displays all slides horizontally. I will see if I can send you a sample of our template if you like....

Hi Michael,

If you're using triggers on the slide master, then it will display horizontally vs. the vertical alignment. Keep in mind that this display is only for you as the author and not something that your users will see.

The previous button is designed to function similar to a browser back back. It will return to the user to the slide they saw before the current slide you're on. If you wanted to change that order, you could use a trigger on each individual slide indicating where it should go (such as Jump to Slide 1.4 when the user clicks the previous button).

Hope that helps!
