Slider alt text repeats on preview
May 01, 2018
I am trying to make my Storyline 360 module more accessible and I am having an issue with sliders. I am happy that sliders can be manipulated with the arrow keys, however, in my tests the alternative text repeats with an added message about how the element is editable in the middle.
From my work with alt text in pictures, I assumed it was best to use the state area of the slider.
I have tried:
- Adding alt text to only the normal state
- Adding alt text to only the hover state
- Adding alt text to both the normal and hover state
- Removing all state alt text and adding alt text to the original slider(outside of the state tool)
- playing with various options for not making the states readable by a screen reader
So far the only thing that has worked at all is when I add alt text to the "Normal" state. However, if my text is:
"Slider with 6 positions. Use left and right arrow keys to view options. Use tab at each position to select content and shift+tab to return to the slider"
It is read by my screen reader as:
"Slider with 6 positions. Use left and right arrow keys to view options. Use tab at each position to select content and shift+tab to return to the slider. Scale from 0-10. Slider 2 is editable. Slider with 6 positions. Use left and right arrow keys to view options. Use tab at each position to select content and shift+tab to return to the slider"
It adds the bolded section, even though I have not specified this anywhere, and repeats the message.
My questions are:
- How can I remove the repeated section
- How can I remove or change the incorrect Scale part of the alt tag (My slider only goes from 0-5, not 0-10
I have included the Storyline file for reference. It is the sliders section.

I saved, closed, and reopened the file in order to attach it here, and it seems to be working in the preview now. It was a weird problem. I don't know if I will have it again in the future.
Thanks for the update! Happy to hear that you're back up and running. If you hit this roadblock again in the future (fingers crossed you won't!) be sure to reach out.
