slider "branching" capability

Sep 22, 2015

I suspect this has been asked but I could not find the answer, sorry. I have a slider with 3 steps where each one is supposed to take the person to a different slide if selected. My problem is that when they move the thumb over the first one it automatically goes to the slide associated with that step, meaning they cannot go to step 2 if that is their choice. I have the slider variable set to "when learner releases" (which is what I thought would keep the trigger from occurring unless the cursor was released there). My triggers for each step are "jump to slide number such and such" when the "slider moves" and if slider is "equal" to "1" (or 2 or 3 depending upon their choice). Is there a way to keep the trigger from happening until the step is actually selected?

Thanks, Walt. Based on what you said, I changed the trigger to read: "jump
to slide X" (or Y or Z for other triggers) when the "variable changes"
"Slider 1" on condition "Equal to 1" (or 2 or 3 for other triggers), which
is what I believed is what you meant - yet it still automatically jumps to
the slide trigger associated with 1 when I am trying to get to 2 or 3. It
seems to work fine in preview (although it can't go to the actual linked
slide of course) but not when published. Did I not understand your
instructions or is there something else to change as well?

Thanks for any further insight you might provide.

Yes, I kept the change variable when learner releases.  I have a feeling this may be one of those funny bugs that even when you change something it remains stuck - as mine looks like the example you sent and works in preview but not when published. I will likely redo the slide from scratch using your original advice to begin with. Thanks for that advice and taking the time to make the example! I appreciate the help on this forum so much.

Sorry to still be posting, but I created an entirely new slider using the triggers suggested and the first step immediately triggered and went to the slide linked to that step even though I had not released the cursor. I then published Walt's example and it also did not work when published - I could not get to step 3 without 2 automatically triggering. Are there other ideas for what might help or is it my browser, mouse, Mercury in Retrograde? :) If not, I might have to give up the slider idea and use the old fashioned approach of clicking on hotspots to allow the learner to choose the topic they are interested in. :)

Yay, success! I changed "moves slider" to when "use clicks" for each slider step and it worked great when I published it (I am publishing to the web). Thanks so much for the help Matthew and Walt. I enjoy the problem-solving aspect of this work but it helps to have a community of colleagues to help you when you are stuck.
