Slider Interaction doesn't work for some users

Nov 06, 2017

Our courses play through our custom LMS using the HTML5 output from Storyline 2 Update 12. We have a particular course that ends with a slider interaction to check a student's understanding of the relationship between a wave's frequency and wavelength. Students drag a slider which changes between layers showing wave graphics of different frequencies to find the right frequency. Once they find the frequency, they click a submit button to check their answer. The interaction works great when viewed on most computers, Chromebooks, and tablet devices. However, on some Chromebooks and on at least one laptop (all using the Chrome browser) the user can not grab the slider to move it. It's like the slider is stuck. We can't find anything different between the computers/devices where the interaction works and where it doesn't work. Even over the same network, it works on some devices and not on others. Any ideas what could be causing the problem? Oh, and we don't use the Flash output at all.

Hi Aaron,

It sounds like your students are using a supported browser for Storyline 2 HTML5 output, so I wouldn't expect any problems with the slider interaction.

Have you been able to recreate this problem yourself? Do you know if all students are using the same version of Chrome?

Our team can help you test your file, if you'd like. Simply attach a copy of it right here, and we'll let you know what we find.

Yeah, we were able to recreate it on some computers/devices and not others. We couldn't find any significant difference between the devices it worked on and the devices it didn't work on. Everyone was on the same version of Chrome.

This afternoon we were able to resolve the issue by publishing the content with Storyline 3 - a solution we've been kind of hesitant to use because we haven't done a whole lot of QA testing of SL3 content in our proprietary LMS. But it seems to be working fine for all users since the republish. Thanks for the help but for now, I think we have a solution that works.

Thanks for that update Aaron. Storyline 3 did provide a lot of new features and increased support for HTML5, so if you're able to use that going forward I think it'll be a much better experience for you and your learners! Take a look at some of the HTML5 improvements here and this comparison chart which compares Storyline 3 with earlier versions.

Hi HC,

Sorry to hear you're running into an unresponsive slider! What kind of tablet are you using?

With your permission, I'd like to take a look at your project file to investigate what's happening. You can share it publicly here, or you’re always welcome to share with our Support Engineers here. They’re available 24/7 to assist!  We'll delete it when done troubleshooting.

So sorry you're running into that, HC!

I see the same inactive behavior when testing the practice slider file on a Surface Pro touchscreen. It looks like the dragging works when using the mouse, though.

I've documented this as a potential bug so we can investigate a fix. Thank you for pointing this out, and we'll share all updates here as soon as we know more!
