Slides missing from my exported course

Feb 06, 2013

I am trying out Storyline on the 30 day free trial and enjoying the results.  However, I have just exported my first course and there are slides missing that are clearly visible in my Story View.  Any thoughts on why this is or how I can fix it?  Thanks!

Welcome to E-Learning Heroes, Michael,

Are you working from any external sources, by any chance? Work on your local drive (your C: drive). Working on a network drive or a USB drive can cause erratic behavior, including file corruption, loss of audio, and other unexpected behavior. You should also make sure the directory path to your project files and your published output is less than 260 characters (for example C:\Articulate).  Avoid using special characters, accents or symbols in your file names.

Additional information regarding "Naming Files, Paths, and Namespaces" in Windows operating systems can be found in the following Microsoft article:

If you've confirmed that the files are local, can you tell me how you're publishing the content? Are you publishing it for web, LMS, CD, etc.?

Are you able to see the slides when previewing, or are they missing there as well?

Hi, thanks for your reply.

My Storyline program is installed on my C: drive.  The directory path to the storyline file I am having trouble with is C:\Users\Michael\Documents\1. Lawton Courseware\course files\1. WHMIS\WHMIS_course_draft3.story

Is that too long?  Can that be causing the problems?  When I preview the entire project, It says it is preparing 18 slides ... that is how many I have so far.  However, only 16 slides appear in my menu.  Is there some setting on the 2 slides in question that I should be looking at to ensure they are exported with the whole project?

Hi Michael!

I see a few things in that directory path that may be causing issues. Can you create a new directory? Or, what may be faster, is to just create a folder on the desktop and name it "Test". Try not to use anything similar to "1. " or any underscores. Save the file using "Save As" and rename the file "Test", again, avoiding any spaces, "1. " entries and underscores.

After doing that, close Storyline. Launch the Test.STORY file from the new file you created. Do you see the same thing, now?

Hi Michael,

When previewing the project, I was able to see 2.3 (History), but I noticed that the slide would not advance to 2.4. I took a closer look and I discovered that the triggers for the "Next" and "Previous" buttons were assigned inside a layer for 2.3. I removed these and placed them on the entire slide (through Story View") and now it seems to progress properly.

If you can, take a look at my published and uploaded version here. Both slides are showing when I view the course, though, as Annie mentioned they don't show up separately in the menu. I'm thinking this is what you intended to happen, however, because it looks like you want to show these as part of the "Introduction" section, correct?

I'm also attaching the modified file so you can take a look. Can you tell me if it functions properly for you using the link above and with the file?

Thanks!

Hi Christine and Annie,

Thanks for your help!  Christine, thanks for pointing out the issue with the next/previous trigger being stuck on a layer.  I fixed that.  When I put that there, I was thinking that it would prevent the learner from moving on to the next page before they viewed the content on the next layer.

As for the missing menu items, I was able to fix that by going to the Course Player to edit the Player Properties.  When I selected "Menu" from the Data section, I was able to choose the button in the bottom right of the Menu window which allowed me to "Reset from Story" and thereby regenerating the menu according to what was in the current storyline.  The missing items reappeared in my Menu.  Problem solved!

Thanks again for your help!

Cheers,

Michael
