states issue

Jun 25, 2013

I am developing a course on ladder safety. On a couple of slides I have the learners spot the mistakes in ladder use. They must click on boxes (the boxes are transparent and have no lines) then a caption comes up and states what the problem is in that picture. Once both boxes have been visited a custom next slide button will become normal (it was hidden before) to be able to advance the slide. This all worked great. But it was hard to find some of the boxes. So I created another state for the boxes, this would create a glow effect if the learner hovered the mouse over the box. Now the custom next slide button does not appear.

Any ideas on how to fix my problem?

Hi Cary, I fixed the first slide for you and it now works properly. The rest are still broken but if you apply what I have done in the first slide to the other slides they should work.

I simplified the states on your rectangles - I got rid of your custom glow state and added a hover state instead - this eliminated the need to add any special triggers to get the glow to display ( note an easy way to create the hover state is to duplicate the glow state and then select hover from the drop down menu). Once you have created the hover state then delete the glow state.

I also go rid of the visited state - you don't need this state for what you are trying to do. ( the main purpose for the visited state is to show that a button or object has already been selected).

I did a few other things but take a look at the code and if you have any questions please ask.

Hi Cary,

Though I'm not 100% sure why, the issue seems to be with the custom state of 'Glow' you created and the associated triggers.

As per the attached, I duplicated the 'Glow' state you created and selected the in-built 'Hover' state for each of the shapes that are acting as hot-spots. I then deleted the 'Glow' states and the triggers you added and the custom next button now appears

Let me know if you need any further clarification or help with this.

I noticed something strange with the "Restore on mouse leave" checkbox. If I uncheck it for Rectangle 1, then during a preview, click Rectangle 1 first, then click Rectangle 2 second, the next button appears. If I click Rectangle 2 first, however, the next button appears.

Same goes for the other way around. Also, if both boxes for Restore are unchecked, the next button will appear as instructed. If both boxes are checked, then the next button will not appear, as it was in the original question on this thread.

Anybody have insight into this? Maybe I am misunderstanding the "Restore on mouse leave" function? Thanks!

Hi S. Yu

The "Restore on mouse leave" function is typically used when you use a  trigger to display a  hidden object when the learner hovers their mouse over an object. If you check the "Restore on mouse leave" function then the object will be hidden again once the use moves their mouse off the object.  If you do not check the Restore on mouse leave" function then the object that was hidden will remain visible on the screen.
