Step-by-step recording

Jul 22, 2013

Hi

I'm new to Storyline and am just experimenting with doing to screen recording of a particular software installation.  The idea is to have the video demo, then use the trial and test features.  I'm interested to know how Storyline works out what to put on each slide in the step-by-step - I assumed it would correspond with each key click but I've tried recording the installation and choosing the "Step-by-Step" option but it puts the entire installation on just one slide.  The software I'm trying to install is a climatic data management system called Climsoft which is written in VB.  The installation has several steps as you might expect with the typical "click next", "agree to terms and conditions", etc. and I assumed Storyline would have put each of these on a separate slide, but the only "action" for the use to try in the trial version is just double-clicking on the .exe file.

I tried recording a short bit using another package - CSPro - and that seemed to work; just a short video produced 64 slides; so I'm guessing the problem is to do with Climsoft itself.  Any hints as to how to get round this would be most welcome.

Thanks

Cathy

Hi Cathy and welcome to Heroes!

When you were recording the first time (of Climsoft) were you using the keyboard or your mouse to navigate through the demonstration steps? What about the second time with the recording of CSPro? That information should help me figure out a bit better what's happening.

Thanks!

Hi Ashley

Ah that’s an interesting point – for the Climsoft installation it was mostly using the mouse as it was things like clicking Next, Agree to conditions, etc.  For the CSPro demo it was more using the keyboard, there was some mouse activity such as Right-click on the name and select "Add Item" sort of thing but there was also more typing such as type the name of the item then use <tab> to move to the next column etc.

Thanks

Hi Cathy,

Thanks for the additional information, and since there wasn't a lot of differentiation between how you recorded one vs. the other, I'd like to have you submit a Support case.  There will be an option on the second page to include a like to this forum post and that is where you'll upload your file as well.

Thanks!
