Stop Storyline Crashing in Preview Mode?

Apr 15, 2014

I am having an extraordinarily difficult time previewing stories in Storyline so that I can set cue points. I would say about 80-90% of the time I press the "play" button to preview the story, the entire program crashes, I have to force it to quit, and I have to restart the program. I've been having this problem for several months and cannot find a solution. I've seen many people post similar problems in threads, but there doesn't seem to be any resolution.

Do I just need to make sure I save a lot and just deal with the crashes? These crashes have kill several hours of my work time every week. Our company is heavily invested in this product and we need a solution quickly.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled flash multiple times, and this has happened to me in multiple Storyline files at all stages of development. I would upload an accompanying file, but that won't really do any good since it has happened with every single file I've worked on since we acquired the product. And it's happened on more than one computer.

Hi Nathanael,

I'm sorry to hear about the behavior you're experiencing with Storyline crashing, and there are a few things I'd want to check in terms of troubleshooting to help prevent this for you in the future.

First, I'd want to confirm that you're working with local project files, whose file name doesn't include special characters, accented characters, etc. or have a file path over 260 characters as described here.

What update of Storyline are you using? We're currently on update 5, and each update has included a number of general fixes that have helped prevent crashing. It's also worth checking that your computer adheres to the system requirements outlined here and I'd recommend to try previewing with any other programs or applications closed to see if that is causing memory issues with Storyline.

You mentioned reinstalling Flash - but did you try to repair Storyline? There are detailed steps here on how to repair Storyline and it's support software that I would recommend going through. It's a lot of steps, but worth checking into all the elements.

Lastly, after you've been able to conduct the repair  by reinstalling Storyline and its supporting software and it persists, send us the Storyline error logs from your computer for review. Here's how.
