One option is to use a custom video play/pause button that is overlays the built-in one. Clicking this button toggles a variable, and shows/hides a layer which in turn pauses the baselayer's timeline. Here is a quick example: http://dev.keypointlearn.com/xcl71_SL/VidAudioPause/V1/story.html.
I don't believe that Michael created it with Javascript, but you may want to send him a private message just in case he isn't subscribed to this thread.
