Stop Variable from adding

Hey folks,
I have a next and back button. A click of either will add or subtract a number to a variable. This variable is linked to states of a picture. So for example, if I hit the next button, it moves the state to variable number value 2, and adjusts the movie state to "window2". So I have 8 pages, so in theory I only need it to go to value 8, but it continues on. This makes the back button really not work well. Anyone have an idea of how to stop adding the variable, or have a tutorial of using variables and pictures for next/back buttons?

I found a work around by changing the state of the button to hidden when the value hits 7. but is there another more tech way to stop a variable from counting?
You could simply disable the Next/Back buttons based on the variable value, thus preventing the variable from being endlessly increased/decreased. See a quick example attached.
