.storyfile locked by another process

I have several versions of the same courses and every single one won't open and is giving me the error message 'locked by another process'. I have found several discussions on this and tried:

copying and pasting the file on the C drive and renaming it (3 different files)
rebooting
creating a new project and trying to import the old project

Other project files will open for me and it's not a laptop issue as a colleague can't open the file either. The files are stored locally.

Yesterday it took 5 hours to publish to LMS and a further 4 hours to save which doesn't seem right either.

We just had a big announcement go out on our intranet about the launch of this courses tomorrow but I cannot make the one final edit I need to do before launch.

Any help or advice appreciated.

Hi Stella,

I just happened to stumble on this thread. I have encountered the same thing multiple times. The only fix that I have found is to:

Copy the .story file that you're having this problem with and paste it into another folder. Rename the file.
Then, open Storyline but don't try opening it from the file you just named. Just open Storyline. Then, browse for the folder that has your file in it and open the renamed .story file.
Lastly, when you are done with the Storyline file, click the File tab and then click the Close folder.

Do steps 2 and 3 every time you work in Storyline. Since I started doing steps 2 and 3 every time, I haven't run into this problem again.

Thanks for reaching out, and great call to start a case! It looks like my teammate, Jose, was unable to replicate the error you're seeing and has shared an article that may help.

Take a look, and if you're still running into issues, follow-up with him to see if we can nail down the cause!

Thank Ren! Jose was able to open my file so it looks like the problem is with my machine. I have asked IT to try the steps he suggested; I'll post the fix when we find it in case it's useful to anyone else :)
