Storyline 2 - player and opening .pdf files

Jan 06, 2017

I've loaded some .pdf files into the Resources and hyperlinked in the Storyline 2 slides.  The hyperlink opens the .pdf, as intended, but when the Learner closes the .pdf by clicking on the 'x' of the .pdf, it closes the slides of the course and just shows the first launch slide where it tells you "Your course has been launched in a new window" when you first start the course.  If the Learner clicks anything else from here, it closes Storyline altogether.

Any ideas?  Seems like there must be a setting either for the player, the course, or the LMS that is taking over, but I don't know what to look for.  This is one of many Storyline courses we have on our LMS, and I've compared settings, but can't find anything different in the LMS.  Thanks.

It's difficult for me to say, because LMSs work differently. My guess would that the PDF opens in another tab of the browser (instead of in Adobe Reader). When that happens, if the learner closes the browser window (instead of just the tab with the PDF), the course would also close. Browsers usually warn about closing one tab vs all tabs, but that setting might be changed.

As far as I know, there's no setting in Storyline for forcing attachments to open in their main applications or even to open in a new browser window. So you might have to warn people about how to close the attachment and/or suggest that they save it to their hard drive and then open it from there.

(Or it might be something else completely...)

Vicki,

It sounds like the PDF is opening in the same window as the original Storyline course vs. a new tab/window? That's often a browser specific setting so there isn't a way to control it within Storyline - so you could look at providing a reminder to users prior to opening the PDF link or perhaps as a note at the top of the PDF.
