Storyline 2 - product release road-map?

Aug 10, 2015

Hi lovely Articulate people, it would be great to know what Articulate plan to do with Storyline. Whilst I am impressed with the array of features in particular: triggers and actions, sliders, story view, and the overall ease of use there are some key features that would make this a knockout product. Namely:

1. gesture support for slate and mobile devices
2. responsive output - output for iPhones is not great. In particular markers are hard to use
3. Geo location
4. fine control over animation paths - pinpoint start and ends points using the std. Size and Control.

All of these features are supported in Captivate (exception of animation paths). However, I've checked out version 8 and it's not a patch on Storyline in terms of features and ease of use. So it's a matter of payoff and using the right tool for the purpose.

I've used Capitvate in the past and editing in the timeline has been so painful. It would be great if Articulate would keep everyone informed of the produce development (not just feature request) then we can

Note: I have submitted feature requests for the above but I feel a Road-map would serve the community better.

Perhaps you could add me to the beta test group?

Cheers,
Alex

Hi Alex,

Thanks for sharing those ideas here and submitting the feature request. I believe I answered another similar thread of yours, but just in case wanted to reply here as well.

Our team has heard from folks in the forums about the desire for a roadmap or listing of requested features, and they continue to look into and weigh those options. I don't have any additional information on when or if that would be something we would consider.

In regards to your specific points:

1. The mobile player does support gestures, just not the HTML5 output. With Storyline 2 you can use the mobile player on iOS and Android devices.

2. Our current philosophy and stance on responsive design is detailed here.

3. Geo location is not one I'd heard before - and I know you mentioned submitting a feature request, but I'm more curious about what elements of this you're looking for in your course.

4. Motion paths were new as a part of Storyline 2, and I know the positioning or even being able to use XY coordinates is something a few other users have mentioned and likely submitted features for as well.

If you are interested in participating in future beta releases, please send an email to beta@articulate.com and our team will be able to reach out to you directly. There is not an active beta currently, so please know you may not receive an invite immediately.

Thanks for the reply Ashley,

Mobile player
As I understand the Mobile player is not available for the iPhone I did a search and can't see it listed in the Apple App Store.
I conducted testing on our current training module using an LG Android (and the Mobile player) and it works a lot better than the iPhone. The iPhone simply displays content in a Safari window. This is highly problematic as the content doesn't size properly, the buttons are harder to press, and the nav buttons trigger the Safari menu - highly annoying.
Any ideas when an iPhone app will be developed?
My boss is crying out for this.

Geo Location
I don't have a specific need in mind but as learners are using mobile technology a lot these days more it would be nice to engage with the environment. For instance, I could imagine developing historical, architecture, or geography content that guides the learner to a location to deepen their learning. Tech like Microsoft Hololens looks mighty impressive!

I'll check over the white paper thanks for providing the link ;-)
I will also sign up for a beta account as I appreciate that rapid eLearning is a real boom.

Cheers!
Alex

No problem Alex and I'm glad you were able to take a look at those.

The mobile player app is designed for tablets and not specifically for the phones, although I know a few users have mentioned searching it within the Apple store and the Play Store (Android) and finding it to download on their phones - but it may not work as expected.

Thanks also for sharing the link in regards to Geo location!

Also, just an FYI that replying via email includes your signature here so you are welcome to edit the post and remove that if needed.

Hey Ashley,

I did read the white paper and Articulate's position does indeed makes sense for slide based content. I have played around ordering items in Captivate 8 and ordering items around is not a fantastic process.

T0he White paper does show a mock-up of an Apple iPhone using an Storyline presentation. It further mentions that a player is under development. I would assume that a Mobile player for the iPhone is around the corner just like the Android one. Pretty please with sugar and spice and all things nice.

I haven't been able to get the GeoLocation to work in Captivate as yet but will keep trying. Michael Hinze had provided a GeoLocation experiment that I'll look into over the weekend.

Thanks for advising about my signature. Frankly, I would welcome anyone contacting me to discuss eLearning development.

Thanks for your keen responses,
Alex

You are too good especially providing an article for the opposition ;-)
The more I think about extending StoryLine for Geolocation etc. the more I think that it's up to us (as developers) to get familiar with other technologies like JavaScript and JQuery to provide these augmentations. Will have fun experimenting!

Thanks again,
Alex
