Storyline 2 will not publish or preview

Mar 08, 2016

Hi there,

I have tried my best to troubleshoot (I have read the other forums and none of the fixes have worked), but I am still getting an error every time I try to publish or preview in Storyline 2. This is the first time that this has happened to me and I just can't figure out the fix.

Please advise.

Hi, Jennifer -- Thanks so much for reaching out and so sorry to hear of your troubles! Just to confirm, have you tried importing the file into a new file to see if you find improvement? And can you say if this is happening in all files or 1 in particular?

And for good measure, in case you haven't already run through these steps, please take a look at this article on Unexpected or Erratic Behavior in SL2 and let us know if you find improvement or if issues persist.

It seems to be with a particular file. I have tried to import to a new file
multiple times, I have restarted my computer, I have uninstalled and
reinstalled.

I have tried adjusting different slides and media, I have tried removing
media, etc.

As I continue to attempt to publish this file, I have found something
interesting and I do not understand. It seems that I can publish/preview
the file ONLY when I take everything out of the player (notes, title, menu,
etc). It will not publish unless the player is completely blank. I have no
idea what the correlation is between the publishing and the player.

Any advice?

Hi, Jennifer -- Thank you for your reply, and it's possible that somehow your file may have become corrupted, however, there may still be a working version of your project in your temp files.

Here's how to check:

1) Open this folder in Windows Explorer: %appdata%\Articulate\Storyline

2) Scan the contents of this folder for a file that starts with the name of your project. If you find one, copy it to your desktop. If you find more than one, copy the latest version to your desktop.

3) Change the file extension of the copy on your desktop from *.tmp to *.story.

4) Double-click the file to open it in Storyline.

And I am not sure if you always work locally, but in the hopes of avoiding corruption in the future, please see this article for our recommendations on how to Create, Edit, and Publish Articulate Storyline Courses on Your Local Hard Drive

You would also be welcome to share your file and I would be happy to see if I am able to publish it on my end. :)

Hi, Jennifer -- Thanks for your reply! Options to share include: uploading it here in the thread so others in the community can chime in to assist. All you'd need to do is click on the grey ADD ATTACHMENT button in the bottom left of the reply box and upload from there.

You may also send your file for private offline review by using this form -- the choice is yours! :)

Can you try to add notes to the player screen? That is an example of what is not letting me publish. I believe I sent you the version that has nothing on the player (that version I can publish). but I need to be able to adjust the player features.

Sorry for the confusion and thank you so much for helping me. I have created a lot of Storyline projects and this is the first time I have had trouble.

hi I have experienced the same problem after copying and pasting from word - something on one page became corrupt - my solution (and it is tedious) is to try to preview each page individually - you should then find one (hopefully not more) page that is corrupt - I then deleted that page and tried to publish and it was fine - you can then replace the corrupt file - hope this helps

Ok, so...

I know this is an old thread, but obviously I found it while looking for help. I had a story that would preview each slide individually, but would not preview by scene (I only had one) or by entire project. Maybe this info will be useful to someone else.

Here's what I tried that DID NOT work:

1. Check to see if it was an overall Storyline issue - Nope! Another Storyline file operated just fine.

2. Import the project (all slides at once) to a new Storyline project - Nope. Still wouldn't preview as a whole.

3. Save as a new name and open - Nope. Storyline wasn't fooled by that.

Then I started thinking, mostly because of what Csilla Varga said here https://community.articulate.com/discussions/articulate-storyline/storyline-corrupted-files (shout out! Thx so much), what if I import the slides a few at a time? Then I can preview the scene and find the slide that's giving me trouble. BAM! Total success. Narrowed it down to the Graded Question slides.

Here's what I could have tried but didn't:

Instead of importing the slides to a new project, perhaps I could have simply divided the scene into multiple ones within the old project. Has anyone tried that? Was it successful or no?

Thanks & Best of Luck if you're in the throes of a nervous breakdown over lost work :)
