Storyline 3 | Audio does not play or is chopped off on slide revisit
Jan 17, 2018
I've been working in Storyline 3 since a few week after its release and have noticed some audio issues in both preview mode and published html5 courses.
Preview:
The first time through is always great, no problems. If I click Replay from the dropdown in the ribbon at the top it seems to pick and choose what audio will play or it will chop the first 2-10 seconds off of the beginning of the audio.
Published html5:
The first time through is always great, no problems. If use the replay icon or select the same slide I'm on from the course menu it seems to pick and choose what audio will play or it will chop the first 2-10 seconds off of the beginning of the audio.
Tested in Chrome, Firefox, and IE (Edge). All browsers are running latest versions. Running on Windows 10. Storyline 3 is also updated to latest version.
Bandaid:
So far my workaround is to set triggers to play media at specific times or cues, this works most of the time but not always.
Clients are complaining and the whole issue is really starting to cause headaches. Can we get this fixed?

Yikes, really sorry that's happening, Brett! Would you mind sending us a copy of the unpublished project file by clicking here? I'd like our Support Engineers to take a closer look so we can get this resolved as soon as possible.
Be sure to let me know your case number so I can follow along!
Thanks for getting back to me. The case number is: 01231838.
Due to heavy branding and such I cannot share many of the more complex courses. I've submitted the case with a very very simple example that shows one of the issues described above.
Thanks again.
Thanks for sharing a sample file with our team, Brett. You'll hear back from one of our engineers as soon as they have tested your file!
Hi Team, Did we get any fix for this issue. I had a replaying audio issue in both PC as well as IPAD. After using the Play media, this is fixed in PC but still the problems exists in HTML5 output.
Appreciate help on this.
Hi Mohan!
I submitted my case and did receive feedback that it appears to be a bug. Since then I have not received any other correspondence regarding this issue. Still a very big headache for myself and the rest of the team in my office. We did notice that the issues seem to be more prevalent when we use a "replace" audio option to insert revised audio, so we've now made it a practice to always import audio as a new file. It still persists randomly, though. We've also been adding a quarter to a half second of silence to the beginning of the actual audio files to accommodate for the amount being clipped on revisit.
Hopefully Articulate will address this issue sooner rather than later, but that's not been my experience.
Hi Brett, For my program, I have used the play media trigger to play the audio. For Replay button, I have added a trigger to "Jump to same slide".
As a fix, I have added an another trigger "Stop Media" followed by "Jump to slide" trigger to Replay button. And it worked for me. Please check if it works for you.
Thanks for the tip, Mohan. I'll definitely have to try that out!
Hi Brett and Mohan,
I'm sorry that you're both struggling with this issue, but I've also connected the report filed to this ELH discussion so we can update you here as soon as we have any other info.
Also, I do see one of the other workarounds noted was to "remove the trigger that will play the media when the timeline starts" so I wanted to share that in case it helps with your set up!
Hi Ashley,
Thanks for chiming in. The addition of the trigger you are mentioning was implemented as a temporary workaround for the issue we are discussing. It was the first workaround I implemented and was able to use as a crude band-aid for one client course. For reasons unknown to me, this didn't work going forward as it did for the course in which I had initially experienced this issue.
Any movement at all on case 01231838 or has it fallen subject to a queue a year or two long?
I can also submit this as a feature request if you think that would be a faster route of resolution.
Hi Brett,
The issue is still open with our Engineering team, so I don't have an update to share yet. As soon as we do, we'll post here in ELH and you'll hear directly as a part of your support case.
Bugs and fixes are prioritized according to the details here on how we identify and tackle bugs.
Hi everyone
I came across this post while searching for a solution to exact this problem.
By trying different things I found one solution that works perfect in my case.
My audio is in sync with shapes appearing at certain points on my time line and it starts with the appearance of one shape. Instead of adjusting the audio sniped by dragging along the time line I set a trigger: "play audio when state of object is normal". Once the time line reaches the point where the object appears, the audio starts - every time, also when revisiting, from the beginning without clipping off the beginning. At least in the preview, lets hope it works as well in the published version.
I have not tried if it also works when the "trigger object" is there from the start of the time line.
hope that helps.
Thanks, Chris for sharing that here! I can add it to the report we filed so that we can share with anyone else who may run across this issue while our team continues to investigate the behavior.
Have you tried putting the video on a layer that gets called immediately?
in my case it helped to add 1s of silence to the beginning of the audio
Is there any resolution to get the audio to replay when revisiting the slide?
Hi Haley,
This is still an open issue with our team.
We have a couple of workarounds that have been shared:
Hi,
I am having an issue where when I hit replay my audio does not restart on my slide, only the animation restarts. My current trigger is set for the audio to play when the animation enters the slide. I have my slide properties as reset to initial state. This issue isn't occurring on my other slides. I can't see that there are any variables to fix this either. Help!
Hey Stephanie,
Looks like you've reached out with a similar question here and Ashley has already popped in to help you out. Let's keep the conversation going over there.
