Storyline 3 Corruption

Mar 08, 2019

I have a file I've been working on and it says corrupted and the previous version says its locked for editing. Is there anyway of getting into a file it thinks is locked.

I have the backup every 10 minutes on but can't find the files. any help much appreciated

Sorry you're hitting this snag, Charlotte. Happy to lend a hand!

First, let's try importing the slides into another Storyline file to see if that helps resolve the error. If we're still stuck, there may be a working version of your project in your Temp Files. Here's how to check:

  1. Open this folder in Windows Explorer: %appdata%\Articulate\Storyline
  2. Scan the contents of this folder for a file that starts with the name of your project. If you find one, copy it to your desktop. If you find more than one, copy the latest version to your desktop.
  3. Change the file extension of the copy on your desktop from *.tmp to *.story.
  4. Double-click the file to open it in Storyline.

Let me know if that helps! 🤞

Hello Katie,

I tried this solution to a similar problem that i have but i can't find the file in the temp folder. I have the original file but it doesn't open. It tells me the file is invalid or was created with a previous version which isn't true. I also tried importing it into a new project but it shows an error reading it as a Powerpoint file instead but it is a storyline file with a .story extension. I attached the prompt i'm getting when i try to open it. PLEASE HELP!

PS: I  was working on the file in my windows environment on my MAC Computer and it was saved to the local drive.

It was quite confusing to me too. When i try to import it to a new project, it shows an error prompt reading it as a powerpoint file.

I have sent it to the support team and they also referred me to searching through the temp files. I have searched through all the temp files in my computer and i can't find it. :(

Hi Wuraola,

Do you have a screenshot of that error message? Although it may not provide an option to open the Storyline file, it would help us further troubleshoot if something occurred in how your files and VM are mapped that caused the corruption. I gave Gerald a heads up that you'd be sending more details on this, so please respond as a part of your case and I'm following along there.

Hi Wuraola,

I wanted to let you know about a new enhancement to Storyline 3 available in the update released this week. If a project becomes corrupt, Storyline will now let you know if there's a working version in your temp files and makes it easy for you to recover. You'll want to look at downloading and installing Storyline 3, build 3. 3.7.20003.0 to take advantage of this fix.

You can download the latest update from this page, and this article will provide more details on how this enhancement will work.

I hope that helps, and please let us know if you need anything else!
