Storyline 3 Publishing Settings, Success Factors and a world without FLASH

Dec 01, 2017

In general, Storyline 3 Publishing Settings are defaulted to "HTML 5 with Flash Fallback".

In the past I've published the majority of my courses with the default setting and had no significant issues after publishing to the LMS (Success Factors), that is until recently...

1. Here's the Scoop:

I recently created a course which has the "Random Bars" animation on the majority of the graphics / text in the course. When I published as a "CD" all animations worked locally. However, once I published the course in the LMS (Success Factors), none of the animations worked properly graphics and text would appear on the slides with no animation at all.

2. Searching for a Solution:

I had others on the team test the course but only found they to had the same problem as me.

At this time I decided to re-publish the course in Storyline 3, but change the publishing setting to just "HTML 5" (without the flash fallback).  Then, published to the LMS and ended up with the same result as before "random bars" Wheel" and " "Wipe" animations did not work.

Three times a charm? In this case yes, third time around I published in Storyline 3 with the reverse option "Flash / HTML5", this seems to work perfectly in Success Factors.

The only problem with this is that recently our company informed us that they are doing away with "FLASH" completely...

3. What to Expect:

Currently my team and I, are searching for answers to our unanswered questions...

4. Questions:

Without Flash:

How will we get courses for example that have "Random Bars" "Wipe" and "Wheel" animations to work properly once published to the LMS?

How will previously built courses be affected that were published with Flash or  Flash/HTML 5 etc.?

Are there settings that we can control within Storyline to fix these issues? or,

Will this be something that has to be controlled within the LMS (Success Factors)? or both?

Has anyone heard anything regarding this topic and can you share some insight?

You've got some great questions, Christy! I'm happy to help.

Random Bars, Wheel, and Wipe animations are considered to be Masking Animations. Certain browsers like Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge don't handle masking animations very well in HTML5.

What web browser were you using when you were testing the published content in your LMS?

Good Morning Alyssa,

The default browser for all employees is Internet Explorer. What would be a better option if that is what is causing the problem?

Would Google Chrome work best? The problem is that our users would be taking the course with Internet Explorer. If we have to use Internet Explorer with HTML5 is there a work around?

Hi Christy!

Yes, Google Chrome is a better option! All Storyline 3 animations and transitions work as expected in desktop versions of Google Chrome, Firefox, and Safari.

If you're stuck using Internet Explorer, I would avoid using masking animations, since the problem is related to the browser and not Storyline itself.
