Storyline crashing when copy/pasting text from OSX through Microsoft Remote Desktop

Dec 05, 2014

Just as the title says. When I copy text from OSX (Adobe Illustrator specifically) and paste it into Storyline through Microsoft Remote Desktop, as soon as I click out of the text box in Storyline, it crashes. The program doesn't completely crash, rather it gives the crash error and kills the text box contents. Then it starts acting weird so I have to restart the program. Thoughts?

It does. Basically it is a way to remote control a PC over a network or the internet, similar to LogMeIn or other remote desktop software. I have the project locally installed on that PC, I'm just accessing the PC remotely through my Mac instead of directly with a discreet keyboard/mouse/monitor. We have a single PC shared among artists at our office for the occasional Windows only software requirements; Remote Desktop Connection allows us all to access it without each of us needing a separate PC, or multiple Windows licenses for Parallels/VMware.

Hi Arthur,

You should be able to access Storyline remotely from the Mac as you described, but you can't copy and paste text from the Mac environment into Storyline. This would also be the case if you were running Storyline within a VM, you'd have to work exclusively in the VM environment. You can see additional information about how that would work here.  The set up you're describing though, does sound like a licensing issue - as Storyline is set up as one license per user as detailed here and every user on a single PC would need their own serial number.

Yes I can copy and paste text from my Mac into the Windows machine through Remote Desktop Connection. It works for every other application I've tried it in. It also works in Storyline. The text shows up when pasting, however as soon as I click out of the text box after pasting that's when the program crashes. It is a bug of some sort.

I'm not using Parallels or other VM environment. As I've explained, I'm remoting into a physical PC with Microsoft RDC.

I'm fully aware of your licensing restrictions. That has nothing to do with the issue I'm having. Only a single user (me) is accessing Storyline on this PC. We have multiple Mac users accessing the remote PC for various pieces of software, but I'm the only one using it for Storyline.

Hi Arthur,

I wanted to point out the licensing restrictions as I wasn't sure how it was being used,  what your set up was, and knowing other users may come across this thread.

I shared the information in regards to Parallels as it's documentation that when working in Storyline, you need to be working within the Windows environment solely, therefore not copying from the Mac side into the Windows side - which is how I understand what you're doing from the remote environment. I can't speak to other applications, but it would not be a supported method for Storyline.  You could try pasting it into Notepad within the PC and then from there into Storyline.

Hopefully if there are other users who have a similar set up with a Mac and a remote environment they'll be able to share their thoughts here as well.

Ah I see. Pasting into Notepad, then to Storyline works ok but obviously removes any formatting. Pasting into any program other than Storyline works fine, which means it's definitely a Storyline bug; apparently one that won't be fixed though since it's not a "supported method" of workflow.

It's too bad Storyline development has shied away from Mac users in every way possible, from lack of an OSX version to refusal to support workarounds for a Mac environment. There are certainly a lot of creatives and developers who would appreciate more Mac support.

In any case, thanks for clearing everything up.
