Storyline - Drag and Drop occasionally marks answer as incorrect

Apr 12, 2018

Hi, we've had feedback from several users that a particular Drag & Drop question is getting marked wrong when they answer it correctly. O ne person thought the correct incorrect answer was swapped on a different slide, so maybe the bug is on more than one slide.

The project was originally made a while ago by someone else and it was republished April 2017.

However, I am still seeing the problem in April 2018 on the latest version of Storyline 360 (v3.14.15225.0). I did play through a published version and this happened to me on one of the other drag and drop slides in that section.

I can see see that the correct answer is associated in Storyline. The incorrect answer problem is not consistent, so something must be getting confused somewhere.

I was able to catch it on video:

Any help would be appreciated.

If you scroll back to the beginning of the video, you can see the Form view for the slide as well as several normal, correct interactions over the course of 2+ minutes.

Hi Corinn,

Thanks for sharing your file. Can you test this version I uploaded to Articulate Review? I tested those drag and drop questions and they all scored correctly.

In the scenarios where it's not happening - do you know what browser learners are accessing it in? Also, where are you hosting/publishing the content?

Hi.
I played through the drag and drop section and the 1st one registered as incorrect and then showed me the same answer I picked.

I played through again and all the answers worked correctly, then I reloaded the browser page and selected the drag and drop slide from the menu and played through the section again and the 3rd one was marked as incorrect.

I recorded my second play through.

At the 1:30 attempt, the answer is marked correct. At 2:55 the same answer is marked incorrect.

That's the odd thing with these. It's not consistent. In the original video I posted, I played through the slide several times reloading the preview in Storyline and it worked correctly most of the time, but then gave a false negative... followed by true positives.

I don't know what browsers are being used, but I've seen it happen in Chrome and Edge and in the Storyline Preview.

We are publishing to the web, HTML5 only and hosting them in a folder on our server and showing them in an iframe inside a quiz question in Moodle. We had too many problems with SCORM in our application, so we simplified.

Thanks, Corinn for sharing that video and testing my version as well. The inconsistency here makes this really difficult to track down. I didn't see anything wrong with your slide properties, triggers or the set up of your drag and drops.

You mentioned creating the course and a few other courses are based on this one - perhaps there's a clue in how you create or duplicate them?

  • First, I'd want to make sure you're working with local files as described here. Not working locally has been known to cause all sorts of odd, unusual behavior.
  • Next, do you do a "Save as" of your file to create a new copy? Do you import the existing file into a new Storyline project?
  • Are you duplicating objects/slides within a project or are you using a standard copy/paste?
