Storyline File Opens but nothing displays

Jul 18, 2012

Opened a course I've been working on in Storyline this morning to make changes and nothing is there. The file opens but displays nothing. It says 0 Scenes and 'Clean' in the lower left hand corner. The file shows 31,284kb in Explorer. I've experienced no strange happenings while working with this file. I worked on it  yesterday with no issues. What happened to my content? Where did it go? Frustrating to say the least. In addition, I created a course package yesterday to load in our LMS. I thought the course package would contain the Storyline master file but it doesn't. Help!

I made some new files starting with just the first scene, then the first plus the second, then those plus the third, to see when the issue begins.  It seems like it wasn't until I added scene four, so I uploaded a file with 4,5, and 6 on it.  The problem is that the issue is intermittent, so now half the time when I open the file with all 10 scenes it won't, and other times it will.  Really driving me crazy.

Hi Frances,

I am very sorry for the trouble and inconvenience this is causing. I just wanted to let you know that the uploads are showing up in the case, now, so support will have access to the files. Someone will be in contact with you on the case as soon as possible. I'm also going to follow the progress of the case.

Thanks again, Frances.

Hi Christine, I had a same issue and just uploaded my source file. Storyline is a great product, hope you can fix the bugs soon.

Hi, Sonic DX.  I can tell you that for me the whole issue resolved when I stopped saving my file to an external hard drive.  I had been conscientiously saving it to my C drive, and then I started saving it to both my C drive and an external.

Big warning for everyone not to do this.  Once I started saving the file only to my C drive and then copying the file to paste into my external so I had a copy, I haven't had a problem.

I know the tutorials say not to save it to thumb drives or externals, but I didn't realize it would be a problem if I did both.  So once you do get it open, only save it to your C drive and see what happens.  Hope that helps,

Frances

Good morning Sonic and Frances,

Frances is correct - thank you for sharing that information - you will want to make sure you're working with local files, only. If you're modifying or viewing content on an external source, you can run into some unexpected issues.

@Sonic - I was able to find your case (#00310882). However, I noticed you mentioned in your case that the file is corrupted. I just wanted to check in with you first, to make sure you're working with local files. If you are, then the suggestions sent to you in the case may be the best solution for the moment.  Just let me know if there are any updates, please.

I hope you both have a great day!

Hi! Some of my files are doing the same exact thing.  It is extremely frustrating.  I tried to import my Storyline into a new one, but a message pops up saying that it is corrupt.  I have been saving multiple Storylines in the same fashion.  When I open some, everything is  there.  Others pop up with the "0 of 0" slides and "Clean".

Is there any suggestions for getting my file back.  I will lose so much time if I have to start over.

Hi Stefanie, welcome to E-Learning Heroes.

I'm sorry to hear that your having some difficulties with your file. Since you've already tried importing it into a new Storyline file, I'd ask for you to share your .story file here or submit a Support case so that we can take a look at the file and see if it's a corruption issue.

If it is a corruption issue, here are some things to keep in mind as you move forward:

  • Work on your local drive (your C: drive). Working on a network drive or a USB drive can cause erratic behavior, including file corruption, loss of audio, and other unexpected behavior.
  • You should also make sure the directory path to your project files and your published output is less than 260 characters (for example C:\Articulate).
  • Avoid using special characters, accents or symbols in your file names (this includes spaces and underscores).
