Storyline file won't play in DropBox

Feb 08, 2013

Hello, all. Wondering if someone can assist with an issue I have with Storyline HTML and/or SWF files not playing in DropBox.

I have uploaded both, and HTML file and a SWF file of an Articulate Storyline program I created and neither play in DropBox (in the Public folder, or any folder). I do not get any error message, nor the "spinning wheel" to indicate the project is loading.

In a related incident, I also found with another Storyline project I created that when I uploaded it to TempShare and sent links to reviewers, five of seven reviewers were able to see it; the other two just got the "spinning wheel" that hung without ever playing the program.

I don't know if these two issues are related or not, but any advice (esp. on the DropBox issue) would be much appreciated.

Hi Viki,

Unfortunately, Dropbox isn't really intended to be a web server, Some community members have been able to run their courses from there successfully, but I've noticed more users are running into issues with it lately. I think this mostly has to do with the fact that it's really intended as a shared storage service and not a web host. Have you considered using a different host, such as Articulate Online? There's a wide variety of web servers and LMS services out there that may be a better option for you.

Have you had a chance to try the content with a web server or LMS? SharePoint and Dropbox are great services, don't get me wrong, but they may not be the best, functionality-wise, for your courses.

Also, while we're on the topic, there is a free trial forArticulate Online. You could always start a free account and test the content out there, to see if you like the functionality. There are many, many threads on the forums for other web servers and LMS providers as well, if you want to take a look around and see some of the suggestions and feedback.

Thanks so much, Christine, for your thoughtful and detailed response. I'm glad to know that it's not something I'm doing wrong in Dropbox.

I usually host courses on a client's LMS, but for this issue I was looking for a temporary housing site for my portfolio courses.I usually host that on a WordPress site and use the Articulate widget. Right now, though, I am re-doing my portfolio site and, while that is down, I was looking for a temporary solution to house just a couple of sample courses so I could show them to potential clients.

However, now that you mention it, I will check out Articulte Online to test its functionality for some of my smaller clients who do not yet have their own LMS, and have asked me about possible options.

Again, many thanks for your help. :)
