Storyline freezes during Preview or Publish

Feb 19, 2013

Hi!

I've created a 60 slide course with audio and interactions. Whenever I try to preview it, the program freezes. Same problem with publishing as well. When I publish (tried to Web, LMS and CD) the progress bar shows up to 3 of 60 and then just freezes. I then have to end the program.

I've tried closing all my open apps and publishing with only Storyline running - still the same problem!

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the community, Shanti!

And sorry to hear about the trouble. If it's consistently getting stuck at slide #3 each time, in preview and publish, that may be a sign that slide #3 has become corrupted. Can you try removing that particular slide and trying again?

Please also be sure you're only working on your local drive

If the issue persists, these steps may help.

Finally, if you're still having trouble, we'd be happy to take a look at the file to learn more about what might be going on.

Let us know, and welcome again

Thank you so much, Peter, for your response.

I'm not sure what the issue is. I reinstalled Storyline according to the instructions in the article you've linked in your response. Also, reinstalled Adobe Flash Player. I could not uninstall Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0. I have Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0. Service Pack 2. And all my files are located on my hard drive.

Now, my file keeps freezing all the time. I'm having to end it every few minutes. I think it's something on my computer because a colleague could publish my file on his machine without any issues. Do you have any suggestions of anything that might be hindering Storyline?

I have been using Storyline for a few weeks now. Storyline's been slow for me from the start. However I was able to preview and publish. After I added audio to my slides it slowed down further and I couldn't preview or publish. My file is not very large - ~ 29MB.

Look forward to your reply.

Thanks,

Shanti

Shanti and Marko,

I had the same freezing issue!  My IT Department looked at the Articulate system requirements and my laptop specs and everything seemed to be sufficient.

They finally gave up and just gave me a dedicated desktop computer to run Storyline.  There is nothing else installed on the computer but Storyline.  It works like a charm now and have not had one instance of "freezing" since I got the dedicated computer.  I know it's not an ideal solution for some companies, but if it's an option for you, you might want to try it.

Hope that helps!  I know how frustrating the freezing can be.

Hi Marko,

I don't see where Shanti ever connect with our Support team, so I'm unsure what the specific issue was there.

As Julie mentioned, it seems to be computer specific - so here are a few things I'd recommend checking into to ensure Storyline behaves as expected:

  • The minimum system requirements are detailed here
  • Are you working with all local project files? Working on a network or USB drive could cause odd behavior.
  • How long is your file path? Be sure the file paths to your projects and published output are well under the 260-character limit imposed by Microsoft Windows. (Publishing adds characters to the file path you selected. If it exceeds 260 characters, your published output will be incomplete.)
  • Storyline will function as expected at 96 DPI
  • What other programs are opening while trying to publish? I'd recommend closing any other non-essential programs
  • When's the last time you rebooted Storyline? Your computer?
  • I'd also suggest conducting a repair of Storyline.

Please let us know how it's behaving after checking into those elements.

I am currently working on three Storyline stories (no they're not all open at the same time).  I am just doing the final check before publishing.  Storyline continually freezes, particularly when I try to preview.  I am having to save constantly and have lost a lot of updated work as the program freezes and I have to close it.

I have reloaded Storyline twice in the past few days and this fixes the problem for a very short time.  I am now unable to preview any of my stories and need to publish them tomorrow.  This has always been a problem and is now causing huge issues.

I have also followed your "conducting a repair of storyline" on previous occasions.  Reloading the software is the only things that seems to help.

I am very disappointed as it is a good package, but very unstable.  Please advise.

Hi there Sheila.  I'm so sorry this is happening to you, especially near your deadline!  I'm not sure if you've seen these steps as a follow up to conducting the repair.  They're a bit more thorough. They also address working on your local C: drive as saving to a network or shared drive can cause erratic behavior.

If you'd like some help to investigate what is going on, please reach out to our support engineers.  They can do some digging and make sure you get back to a stable installation!

Thank you for a quick response.

I am working on my PC – no other programs open. The only way I can preview is to reload Storyline. If I shut down the computer and return the next day, it will freeze as soon as I try to preview. Having to reinstall everytime I return to the project is ridiculous and I don’t know what else to do. Previously reinstalling was my last resort, but now that isn’t holding.

Hi Sheila,

I don't see a support case for you yet, so I'm going to open one on your behalf so that our team can investigate further what is occurring with the freezing of Storyline.

You'll receive an email soon from our Support team. And in the meantime, I did also want to let you know that responding via email includes your signature here- so you're welcome to edit the post and remove that information if you'd like.
