Storyline getting stuck on top of other windows

Mar 05, 2013

Windows 7 64-bit

I have an issue where Storyline will randomly get stuck on top of other windows in my workspace. For examle, I have two monitors. On my left monitor, I have Outlook and a Word doc open. On my right monitor, I have Storyline and Chrome open. If I'm working in Storyline, then click to bring Chrome to the front, Storyline stays on top. I have to minimize Storyline to view anything that was behind it. Again, this seems completely random. I can shutdown Storyline and relaunch it and it will behave normally for several hours. Then all of the sudden it will get locked back on top. Very strange.

What is very concerning is that this bug pop up while I was changing some settings within Storyline, which caused me to lose 3+ hours of work. Essentially I went to publish my project - the Publish window opened fine, then under Title I clicked the ... button and this opened behind Storyline. No matter what I did, I could not bring this window to the front. I could Alt+Tab and see it as an option but could not actually make it active. This caused me to force close Storyline from within the Task Manager resulting in not being able to save my project.

I'm at a loss. This has happened several times now and is becoming extremely frustrating. Any ideas?

Hi Steve,

Sorry to hear about the trouble with this. I'm afraid I haven't experienced the same thing, however, and this is not expected behavior.

Do you know if anything changed on the system before this started happening? Any updates, etc.?

Also, can you tell me what version of Storyline you're currently running? To find this information click on "Help" and "About Articulate Storyline". if you're not running version 2 (1212.1412) please download and install Update 2 from the link below:

Articulate > Download Storyline Update 2

If the issue continues, please try to preform a repair on Storyline:

  1. Close Articulate Storyline.
  2. Locate your Articulate Storyline installation file. If you can't find it, download it again, and save it to your computer. Use the download link in your product confirmation email, or click here.
  3. Right-click the installation file, and select Run as administrator.
  4. Select the option to Repair, and follow the prompts to complete the process.
  5. Reboot your computer.

Hi Christine,

Thanks for the suggestions.

This is actually occurring on a brand new Dell Precision running Windows 7 64-bit. Previously, I was on a Dell Latitude running Windows 7 32-bit. My company upgraded me a couple weeks ago and I've been struggling with a few nagging issues ever since. This one is fairly serious so I'd like to find a solution soon.

I'm running the most current version of Storyline and have also already tried the repair option.

Any other ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Steve

Hi Christine and Steve,

I've run into this situation also. I, too, have Win-64 bit, although I don't know whether that has anything to do with it. Just thought I'd throw it out there.

The solution I've come up with is t

  • hover over the Storyline shortcut or icon or whatever you "should" call it in the taskbar
  • right-click on the thumbnail of the Story
  • select restore from the shortcut menu

This has always returned it to the foreground for me. I especially run into this problem when I have many programs AND many Storyline files open at the same time. This does the trick.

If my explanation isn't clear, let me know and I'll try to provide screens shots. Can perhaps also do a Screenr at some point but probably not for a coupla' days...
