Storyline Menu Navigation

Apr 30, 2013

Hi All,

Sorry if this topic has come up before but...in the Storyline menu there are (user-added) Headings and Slide Titles.  It seems that the headings are not navigable (i.e. you can't click on them to teleport to that scene) but the slide titles are, yet there is no discernable difference in the appearance in the menu side-bar.  This is frustrating for the end-user...or have I missed something here?

Hi Steve,

I'm afraid I'm not following. You have your course set up so the user can add Headings and Titles for slides? How exactly are you accomplishing this?

Maybe I'm just having a difficult time visualizing this. Can you give a little more information on how you have this set up, or can you post the .STORY file here? I'd be happy to take a look and see what's happening.

Thanks!

Christine

Good morning Steve,

Ahh, thank you for clarifying. That makes sense :)

If you have scene titles and those are selected, the user should move to that scene and the first slide in the scene.

The headings that are inserted aren't actually tied to any scenes or slides. These are really just to help organize your content, if you need to provide additional sections. Now, if you place these below your slide or scene titles, I can certainly see how it would cause confusion for users, because it may look like that header should navigate to a section - but it will not.

It also looks like some of your sections/headers may have been moved over to the right. When you do this, it adds a little bit to that confusion. What you may want to do is move them back over to the left, so it looks a little more like a header and not a section/menu link.

Hopefully some of that information will help with your menu and the navigation. If, however, you want the users to be able to interact with your headings for navigation, it may be best to rename your scenes instead of inserting headings. You could also create "imitation" headings by creating a blank slide at the beginning for your headings and simply have that slide jump to the first slide in that scene.

I hope this helps!
