Storyline mobile and output capabilities

Oct 02, 2012

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the the community and to the articulate software. I think I've exhausted every keyword I could possibly think of to find what I'm looking for. I have a new project in mind that I would like to pitch to my supervisors and I'm trying to figure out if storyline is the right software for it or if I have to go another route. The project I want to work on is a mobile assistant training aid. We have preventative maintenance checks that we have to conduct and sometimes they don't get done right. So my project (on an android tablet or ipad) will be a step by step process with pictures (no video) on what needs to be done. So everytime they conduct the proper procedure they make check a box and move on to the next. This would have to be project that would work without a connection to wi-fi.

Now if that was all I needed, then I'm sure storyline could handle it. But here are some of the options I would like it to have that would take it over the top.

 1. The results would output to a form that could be emailed (like a certificate) to the user or saved to access later in case they do not have wifi and must handwrite the results on the proper form. I read that storyline currently has problems with printing to certificates, is it possible to output the results to a csv format then emailed to the user which would then later be imported to a pdf form?

2. Save the results locally so the user can reference it later, a history of previous results to track trends. Such as user who is taking a quiz and can track how many he has taken of the same quiz and what his results were for each one.

Also I couldn't find any info on how I would be able to protect the project. Not the information itself, but there is proprietary information that we do not want anyone outside the company to see. Is this something that has to be worked through the app store? Or is the only way they can download the course(for Ipad) is providing a link on a page to limited access to it.

Can the project be locally loaded on android tablets? I read on another forum there was issues, but it didn't specify if what software of Articulate they were using.

I know this is a lot for a newbie, but I've seen how helpful this community is and that what pulled me to try out this program and my luck on this forum.

Hi jerson, for your first requirement (make the project available without a wifi connection), i believe the way to do that would be to publish for iPad (in other words, your learners will need to use an ipad and the Articulate mobile player), and you would select "allow downloading for offline viewing" when you publish. this enables people to store the output on their ipad and access it even if they are offline.

For your Android users i think it's a little sticky because (a) they can't use the Articulate Mobile player since it's an ios app, and (b) that means they would need to view the HTML5 output instead (which involves a lot of other design considerations on your end, because html5 is not as advanced or robust as  a lot of folks think it is). Also... (c) to view html5 content they would need to be connected to the internet and view it from a web server UNLESS there is maybe a way to let people put the content on their android device? Since i am not too familiar with android i'm not sure of that.  If people can copy the content to their device and run it locally there, maybe that is a solution, not sure.

as far as saving/printing/emailing the results, there is no inbuilt way of printing or emailing - you would perhaps need to work with some javascript to get things like that to work, or maybe use a lms that would help you take care of thse things? the issue with relying on an LMS, though, is that if you have mobile learners, your LMS would need to support Tin Can API, which it's my understanding that most currently don't yet.

did you already download the trial? If so you probably got an email from a Articulate sales rep who might be the best bet for answering these kinds of questions

Thanks for the reply.

I'm aware of the Ipad App, but I was more concerned with the ability to put it on the Android. There were a few posts that I read that suggested saving the file on the SD Card, but that's something I'll probably have to try later.

If the saving/printing/emailing option is possible and just relies on external javascripts then that's fine. I have a few friends that are programmers that could help with that.

I did download the trial and received the email, but I didn't really read through the email. I thought it was just another generic email that welcomes you to the community blah blah blah that everyone gets when they sign up for something.
