Storyline not accurately reporting number of attempts to Saba LMS

Jan 09, 2013

Storyline file is not reporting all attempts to Saba.  Saba is only recording the score/result of the last attempt.  We use attempts data to trouble-shoot.

We've added the attempts variable and set it based upon advice from this forum.  http://community.articulate.com/tutorials/products/limiting-quiz-attempts.aspx

These actions have worked with other courses, but not this one.

Saba is reporting that the cmi.core.exit value being set to suspend.  We're wondering if that might be the source of the problem.  If it is the problem, I don't know how to fix it.

We have applied the fix noted in this post. http://www.articulate.com/support/kb_article.php?product=st1&id=hd0cc4e9mgvm

Any advice out there?  Of course this is an urgent issue as it is delaying implementation of a new system.

Hey Judy!

Out of curiosity, have you tried testing your course in SCORM Cloud to help us determine if the issue is Articulate-related or if it's on your LMS's side? If it appears in SCORM Cloud as well, we'd be happy to take a closer look at what might be going on. If you can't replicate the issue in SCORM Cloud, it's probably an issue that you'd want to take to your LMS team. The articles here and here may also help clear up common LMS issues. Hope that helps...

I was not aware of Cloud.  Thanks for the option.

I uploaded my course and it is recording attempts.  That is good.  But I can only see the most current score.  does Cloud keep record of scores on previous attempts?  Can't find that function (if it is under Course Reportage Function that area seems to go into an eternal loop).

If the Cloud recorded previous scores then my course appears to be working.

Typically an LMS will can and will track number of attempts, but it will only hold the latest score from the last attempt. I could be wrong and probably am.

SCORM is one thing. How an LMS interprets SCORM is another. Each have their own flavor.

To Peter's suggestion, SCORM Cloud is the industry standard testing site. If it works there, it *should* work on any LMS if in fact that LMS is certified in that particular SCORM version (1.2 or 2004).

If you have questions about SCORM, the folks at Rustici Software (SCORM Cloud) will be able to help troubleshoot. If it's a quick look/fix they'll usually pretty good at helping. If it's more involved there may be a service fee, but I'm not sure either way.

We are also having issues with Storyline not reporting the amount of quiz attempts to SABA.

Similarly to Judy, I can only see the score of the most recent quiz attempt (the previous score is overwritten). The user is given 3 attempts to pass the quiz, but in each instance the score appears next to the 'Attempt 1' field. Is there a way to have each quiz attempt logged in SABA?

Cheers.

Hi Callum,

We came up with a work-around that allows Saba 5.5 to record each attempt.

Add a trigger to the Retry Quiz button.

Action:  Adjust variable

Variable:  Attempts (I think we created this variable)

Operator: +Add

Value:  Value   (enter what ever value you would like.  I used "1")

When:  User clicks

Object:  Button 2 "Retry Quiz" (or whatever you named your retry quiz button)

This works when people either re-try the quiz in the same session, or when they close after failure, re-enter and select the "return where the left off option" then click re-try quiz.  These two options seem to be the options most people choose.

Hope this helps!

Judy

Hi Judy,

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. Before I try this, could you please confirm that the variable you created is titled 'Attempts'?

Does SABA recognise this variable name? For example, does this new variable communicate directly with SABA, and allow us to view the number of quiz attempts?

Thanks again,

Callum.
