Storyline Onscreen Text Clipping Issue
Aug 23, 2019
Hello. We have run into a situation with a project, and I am wondering if anyone can shed some light as to what might have caused it, and how to avoid this from happening in the future.
We have a Storyline module that was developed by an individual on our team. He works remotely. He developed this project on his own computer, running Windows 10 OS. A quick edit was required on a day that this developer was not available, so the file was opened by another team member at a different location, using a company laptop running Windows 7. I do not know the screen resolution of either machine, or how many monitors were used while developing the module, but I believe it is a safe assumption that the laptop on which the file was opened after the fact would have had a lower resolution display.
The editor of the file discovered that there were some unusual things happening on screen that were not evident from the original design. Most glaringly was the way some text was getting clipped. In the provided image, you can see that the font used was Arial. It’s as universal as it gets and should not have been a factor in the strange rendering on the editing laptop, I would think. This clipping was not only showing on the development screen, but also in a subsequent publish from the editor’s laptop.
Here's where it gets a little more puzzling to me. Once available, the original designer opened the file on his development machine, and two other computers of varying configurations. None of them showed the clipping. Everything appeared normal. Later, after playing with recommended screen resolution setting on the laptop that showed the clipping, the clipping anomaly could not be duplicated. I then tried to open the file on my company laptop, and it displayed properly for me.
While it's good news that the problem can’t be duplicated on demand, it is worrisome for our team that it could occur again and cause a workflow problem. We need the reliability of any developer having the capability of opening and editing a file created by another without unexpected things occurring and disrupting our workflow.
Is there any known reason why this may have occurred? Has anyone else ever encountered this type of problem? Any insight would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Dave

Hi Dave,
Thanks for reaching out and sharing what you were running into.
You mention that you were using the recommended settings, but was that per laptop or for Storyline use?
I'd recommend using the 100% setting for both Windows 10 and Windows 7. This document explains it best.
Thank you for your response.
As I understand it, the editor changed his Windows 7 screen resolution to see if it fixed/affected how the Storyline project displayed. We are hopeful that the issue's disappearance has been resolved by this change. If there are any other known reasons for this type of occurrence, we'd sure like to know so we can avoid it in the future.
Thank you.
Dave
Hi David!
Leslie said it best! You can stay clear of this issue by using the 100% setting for both Windows 10 and Windows 7!
Customizing the setting will prevent further issues where Windows resizes elements to fit on the screen. Best practice would be to keep this document handy if you notice a similar situation.
