Storyline playback in Chrome

Aug 26, 2014

We are working with a client who has Articulate Storyline and having significant issues with Chrome. We put your tool into our LMS and it worked well before a month or so ago. It seems Articulate has changed your player code but Chrome doesn't like what is going on. We are missing videos, assets, backgrounds etc.

Please let us know?

Hi Tim and welcome to Heroes!

I'm sorry to hear about the behavior you're experiencing, but I haven't heard a similar report about Chrome (and it's the browser I use daily). Can you let us know what update of Storyline you're using? We're currently on update 6 - and you can see all the fixes that were included here. Also, what version of Chrome are you viewing the course in? Does it work correctly in other browsers such as IE and Firefox? Lastly, are you able to test it outside of the LMS to rule out any interference there as well? You could use a site such as SCORM Cloud which is a free, industry standard testing method for SCORM content.

Hi Ashley,

I will find out the version but I am pretty positive it is update 6 the latest one. Chrome messes it up. IE is ok, Firefox sometimes and Safari sometimes.

You can see this one- http://playground.uniphix.com/story_html5.html

I am sure in IE it works but in Chrome you can't see the background, the general, the videos inside dont play etc. Carolina is that the same for you?

My developer says it is the player code that was changed by you guys and we have tried every type of solution to fix it and come up with the same problem.

I reviewed your changes on July 24th and that is when all our articulates started to do weird things. Before that, they played fine in Chrome- which means all the assets where there, videos, backgrounds, they were complete. After that, we have had weird issues with them. It is inconsistent as well but the best we can tell is the new player code you did on July 24th jacked things up. We are now missing several things even though we can see them trying to load in the network. It just keeps spinning.

Hi Tim,

I opened your link as well - and got a 404 error. Not sure if you have another version you can send us?

I see that Chrome also recently updated from version 36 to 37, but I haven't noticed any issues with courses and playback there and I test there throughout the day. I also don't know the specifics of the code updated (that's our QA and Engineering team) but it's the first I'm hearing of an issue like this. Are you able to share a copy of your .story file here with us and a link to the published output as well? If you'd prefer it may also be easier to handle this in a Support case, and you can share your files privately with our Support Engineers here.

My developer deleted it all and reloaded it so try again.

We found out the Flash version works fine but the HTML5 is the problem.

HTML 5 Version is not working properly-

Flash Version

Flash works great but when you look at the HTML5 in chrome under network it loses assets all over. No video, no background etc.

This is directly from our client.

Here is the dropbox link for the file output

Here is the dropbox link for the original storyline file

For more specifics I got from our client:

Another issue you will want to look into is the audio volume differential between the published file and the LMS version.

The volume of the videos that are in this articulate, prior to being placed inside of LMS, were increased by 10 decibels. I played back the original video vs the LMS video in the Articulate and there is a SIGNIFICANT reduction in audio clarity and quality. I had the volume all the way up and STILL, you could barely hear it.

I loaded the the storyline file in Chrome and Firefox to compare. Like Harri C menitioned, just a green background appeared in Chrome but I also noticed that some of the button labels and popup text isn't appearing when viewing the HTML5 version in Firefox. 31.0. (sample income statement for example). The first time I loaded the file in firefox, none of the labels on the black buttons to the right of General Ledger appeared (Income Statement, KPIs & Metrics, Real Life Census etc) but when I refreshed the page and started the course over, the labels appeared so I think there is something more going on than just an issue with Chrome.

Hi all,

Sorry I didn't get back into this thread yesterday evening - but I'm going to start testing the links Tim shared here and see if I can replicate it within my Chrome version 37 browser and then I'll be able to report it to our Quality Assurance team. I haven't heard any other chatter about an issue with Chrome's newest update - so I'll let you know once I'm able to get through some testing and share with them.

Thanks!

Hi Tim,

Publishing for LMS will allow you to track and gather data from the Storyline course such as how a user answered the quiz questions, how many slides they visited, and also allow the LMS to control the resume behavior of the course and let the user pick up where they left off last.

Publishing for web, doesn't include the same tracking elements - although you can still use quizzes and offer a results slide for the user to see how they did. The resume behavior would also be handled by the browser - so if the user cleared their cache, history or accessed the course from a different computer it wouldn't allow them to pick up where they left off.

If you were to conduct a test publish, you'd see a set of different files within the LMS version as well - and those are the additional files for tracking and such.
