Storyline - Problem with states on interactive workstation slide

Jun 04, 2014

Recently I've designed a module on how to setup you workstation correctly.

At the end of the module I have a knowledge check section.

I have created an interactive workstation as one of the knowledge check questions.

On this interactive question the following occurs:

  • the user must find 7 issues on a base image. (this works)
  • they must mouse over/click on all 7 issues. (this works)
  • when they click on an issue a layer appears with information, image and 'confirm' button. (this works)
  • the user then clicks 'confirm' button and they return to the base image. (this works)
  • once the user clicks 'confirm' on all 7 info layers a 'final message' layer should appear. (NOT working)
  • the user must click on a 'submit' button (on the final message layer) to complete and proceed to the next knowledge check question. (NOT working)

My problem is:

  • I tried setting up 'visited' states on all of the 'confirm' buttons on each layer but;
  • this wont work with visited states on 7 separate layers.
  • I've also tried, setting up all the info (not as layers) but on top of the base image.
  • Then hiding each piece of info when the selected one is selected/viewed.
  • Problem here is.... even though all the other info is hidden, you can still click on them in the base image.
  • I need un viewed info to be non selectable. Then I need to a state or something to confirm all 7 have been viewed via a 'confirm' button

Please note I have viewed the tutorial on how to setup visited states on multiple objects (i.e confirming all objects need to be selected to complete a question)

Hope this makes sense. I am now at a loss on how to make this work. I think I've thought too much about it that im now confusing myself hahaha. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have attached the storyline file for reference.

Thanks

Andrew

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for sharing your project file here - I took a look, and I'm unsure how you'd like to trigger the final message layer - as there were not any variables or state changes to refer to. I would probably use a variable and adjust one on each layer - and based on the value of those variables determine when to show the final layer. Or instead of using hotspots to trigger the layers you could use tranparent shapes that have a visited state (hotspots can't have states).

See attached file that fixes this issue: "once the user clicks 'confirm' on all 7 info layers a 'final message' layer should appear. (NOT working)". I added checkmark indicators that are shown when any of the seven items are clicked. That way, the user gets an indication what was already selected and the state of the indicators is also used to display the final layer. I'm not sure what your intentions are with the submit button. "Submitting an interaction" requires a freeform or standard quiz question. There is none on this slide. You could turn this interaction into a Freeform question and then add a Submit trigger to the Submit button.

Thanks Michael and Ashley.

Apologies for the delay in getting back to you. Great advice from you both and thank you so much Michael for the suggested solution and reworking of my file. Works just how I wanted it too! I  was definitely over thinking the problem. Sometimes all that is takes are a fresh pair of eyes. Thanks guys!
