Storyline quiz randomness
Apr 23, 2015
I've embarked on what has turned out to be a nightmare Storyline module! Each time I try to get the quiz to work, a new element of randomness creeps in.
In my latest attempt, the 'next' and 'previous' boxes appear in the player even though I've deselected them in the slide properties box.
I actually wanted the submit button to appear and indicated thus by selecting the 'submit' box in the slide properties box, but it doesn't appear.
What's going on? Can anyone help?

Hi Katherine
Have you tried importing your story into a new story file? Or you can upload your .story file for someone to try and help you.
Hi, Katherine --
I agree with Wendy; please make sure you are working locally as described here, and you may want to try importing the file into a new file. If you are still having issues, you might want to try to repair Storyline. And could you also confirm when and where you are seeing the 'next' and 'previous' boxes (as they'll appear as part of review regardless). I'd also like to invite you to share your file so that we may take a look at the issue.
Thanks, Wendy and Christie. I have resaved the file locally and am having the same problem. I also pulled all the slides into a new file but this stopped the quiz reporting correctly.
Re the next and previous buttons, I've set the quiz up so that learners must return to the questions they got wrong and redo them. In other words, they're not reviewing the quiz.
I will look into the repair option but have also uploaded the file in case anyone can see what's going wrong. Thanks again for your help.
Hi, Katherine -
Sorry to hear you are having difficulty and thank you for providing your file. Unfortunately, I did not see the same behavior that you are experiencing. Please see the screenshots below, as well as the published output on Tempshare.
Hi Christie
Many thanks for looking at this for me.
The problem I'm having is that I've set the quiz up so that if you get more than one answer wrong you have to do it again. You're sent to the start of the quiz to have another go. It's at this point that the submit button is replaced by the next and forward buttons - bizarre. I've attached a screengrab from the Tempshare output.
I'm really prefer not to change the quiz format because of this issue. Are there any other options?
each slide needs to be set to reset to initial state the next and previous buttons appear because it is acting as if it is in review mode. to prevent it going to review mode you need to use the trigger to reset the results before you jump back to the start.
Hi Kathriene,
On the result slide: Fail Layer. Move the highlighted trigger (in the attached screenshot) to the below most position as I have done. It shall solve your problem.

Yusuf
Phil,
That's not suggestable. Because if she decides to add a review feature to her course then she would not be able to because while revisiting the slide the slide will get reset to initial state.
If reseting the quiz results does not work the only option is to reset to initial state. As the user cannot get one wrong in her quiz format, the quiz review has very little use here. Sometimes it is a compromise when working within authoring tools.
