Mar 30, 2018

Hi,

Need your help with regards to following:

Issue-  Need to add Search option in Articluate Storyline 2 with the following conditions:

1) Menu option should be disabled

2) Particular list for search option is not acceptable/ Any word searched should be displaced(Present in the file) and should be clickable which directs us to the the relevant page.

If JavaScript is used to create this feature, request you to kindly provide the same.

According to this part of the user manual:  https://community.articulate.com/series/articulate-storyline-2/articles/choosing-player-features-in-articulate-storyline-2

1. The built-in search is active only if the menu is. It will find items that are in the text on the slides, or in the notes if the notes are active. So you will not be able to activate the built-in search and disable the menu.

2. You will have a particular list for searching. The list will be all the words present in the file. The only other option is to search the entire language, and try to keep track of where each of those words is in your presentation. You will have to create a method of keeping track of each word in the project, and where it is located. SL 2 can do this with the search function, but if you cannot use it, you will have to do it manually.

3. Javascript. Once you have a listing of all the words, and where they are, it will be very veasy to find them with javascript. The problem is that the only control js has ofer SL is to change variables. Some programming languages have the ability to jump to different parts of the code using only one line of code, depending of the value of a variable. SL does not have that capability. So for this to work, you would have to create a trigger for each word, to jump to the slide in question, depending on the value js passes back. If you have more than a handful of word, that option will be unacceptably slow.
What you are up against is this: You have an oil tanker, and someone wants you to deliver one million gallons of oil, but they don't want the oil to go in the tanks. They want it to go up on the deck. You can try it. It will be very messy, will take a lot of resources, and won't work. SL2 is the tanker, finding the words is the oil, and the built-in search function is the tanks in the tanker. They don't want to use the tanks. You can try it, but it will be very messy, will take huge amounts of resources, and won't work in the end. You have to convince them that they can have the search, but it will come with the menu, or they can not have the menu, but that will take away the search also.
The compromise I might settle for is to use the menu, but erase all the slide names from it. Without slide names, it doesn't function as a menu, but still has the search function.
