Storyline Translation Export to Word Not Working

Aug 25, 2015

Hello,

I'm trying to use the Translation feature in Storyline 2 (exporting to Word file type), but it won't generate the file. My Storyline 2 version is fully up to date (update 6). Is there a step I'm missing? I reviewed the steps laid out in this tutorial - seems extremely simple but just not working for me. I'm using Windows 8.1, and MS Word 2013.

I've attached a picture to show how far my export gets before it stops - only clickable options are then OK, and cancel. It looks like the translation exported, but when I go to my export location there's no Word file (not an error file, nothing). The only export that seems to  generate a file is the XLIFF (and I don't know how to work with this).

Thank you for any suggestions you  can offer.

Okay, thanks Phil. I thought maybe you were referring to a doc file type setting somewhere inside Storyline. The rest of my applications and OS are set to use word as my default doc type. It's quite unusual because Storyline has no problems when I use File, Publish, Word - only the Translation export is an issue. Odd, and time consuming to manually copy and paste the editable text into word. Thanks for all the help. I've also passed on my .story file to the support team so we'll see what they uncover as the contributing issue :-)

Yes thanks Ashley, Leslie looked into it for me and got it to work on her system.

Which made me curious as to how I could get it to work on mine. So I thought I'd post an update that after fiddling with this and testing various ways (changing file name, save locations, export type variations) I can get this to work on my system....

Only if I use the simple "Word doc" export option and I do not rename the export file (ie. no "test.doc" or "plswork.doc" otherwise it results in errors).

There is no scenario in which I can get the "Word doc with reference column" to work. But that's okay for now, at least I'm not manually copying and pasting text. :-)

Hi Joyce,

What version of Windows, Office and Storyline are you using? Have you confirmed that you're working on local project files and exporting it locally as well? Did you check that Word is closed when going to export?

If it recently stopped working is there anything else on your system that changed? Have you looked at going through a repair of Storyline?

A note for your QA team as I just ran into this issue.

I'm using Windows 10 and Office 2016. Export failed so at first I thought it might be due to the gargantuan story I was working on so I created a new story, imported the 16 slides I wanted to export and ran it again. It still didn't work so I checked default app settings as recommended above and Word 16 was already default app. I had no other Word docs open and I was exporting from a local file to a local folder. I went ahead and opened Word and a message pop-up notified me that Word could no longer display the document (no file name was listed) because there were too many grammatical errors to continue to display the document. It instructed me to uncheck the setting that displays grammatical errors.

I went to the options and removed the check, closed Word and still could not export. Finally, I went to Device Manager, found that Word was still running a process (there were no Word docs open though). I stopped the process, and then atempted the export again and it worked.

A lot of variables there and unfortunately I did not get a capture of the Word error (victim of click first, think after), but maybe there's some info that can assist your team or others resolve the issue.

I can get file-publish-Word to work, but still can't get it to work with file-translation-Export. I tried both the Word doc, and Word with reference column. I have Word closed, and task manager says there is no Word running. I'm trying to get a sample project complete, do a quick translation, and then import it, so I can show my boss that we need to spend the money!

Hi Philip,

What version/update of Storyline are you using? What Office and Windows version are you using? Are you export it to a local drive? Do you receive an error message or it just doesn't work? You'll want to make sure that you're following the guidelines here in terms of working locally and that you adhere to the system requirements. Also, being on the latest update is a good practice, so you can download Storyline 2 Update 7 here.

Sorry, didn't get right back to you.

Ashley Terwilliger replied:

Hi Philip,
What version/update of Storyline are you using? Storyline 7: 1509.1408

What Office and Windows version are you using? MS Office 365 Pro Plus; Windows 8.1 Enterprise

Are you export it to a local drive? Yes

Do you receive an error message or it just doesn't work?

It looks like it is starting to process in the status box, then I get an error box that is blank with an "i" in it, and I click okay to make both close. There is no file created.

You'll want to make sure that you're following the guidelines here in terms of working locally and that you adhere to the system requirements. I'm on a Microsoft Surface with 256 Gb Storage; 8 Gb of RAM; 64-bit

Also, being on the latest update is a good practice, so you can download Storyline 2 Update 7 here. I'm on Storyline 7
