Storyline upgrading projects from SL1 to SL2 on its own

Nov 25, 2015

It happened twice already, that a collegue has a SL1 project in which she's working. The thing is that one day she tried to open it and it only opened on SL2, without her even touching the file (she opened it days before on SL1 and now she couldn´t). Apparently the program upgraded the file on its own, luckily it created the backup, but we're still unsure on how it happened.

Has someone ever had this problem or situation?

Hi Mica,

If you have Articulate Storyline 1 and Articulate Storyline 2 installed on the same computer, Microsoft Windows will always open your project files in the latest version by default—in this case, Storyline 2. If you need to open an existing project file in Storyline 1, launch Storyline 1 and use any of the following options:

  • If the file appears in your "recent projects" list, just click it.
  • Click Browse in the lower left corner of the start screen and select the file you want to open.
  • Click the round Articulate button in the upper left corner and select Open, then browse for the project file.

Also, when you open it in Storyline 2, it'll automatically create a back up copy you can use in Storyline 1 still as they are not backwards compatible. Hope that helps!

Yes, we already know that. (side note: in my personal computer i have both versions and by default it opens them on SL1, but theres no problem).

Our problem is that that backup file and the project updating process was done ON ITS OWN, with no interference what-so-ever from any of us, which is weird and might bring trouble in the future.

Hi Mica,

When you say "on it's own" - are you unable browse to that file in Storyline 1 still? If so, that's something we'd want to take a better look at. What I suspect you're seeing instead though, is the icon's all look to be Storyline 2 - and that also happens based on Storyline 2 being the latest install on the system (likely) and that they both have the same .story file extension. If you were to follow the steps above to open it you should still be able to access in SL1. I also use the "right click" and then choose to open with Storyline1 - but I've heard that method doesn't work for everyone.

Yes, she already tried browsing directly from storyline 1 (which is how she opens all storyline 1 projects because right clicking on the file doesnt give the option to open with sl1).

When i say "on its own" i mean she once opened it correctly with SL1 and after a few days she had to do some changes, proceeded to open it with SL 1 as i mentioned above (by browsing) and she got the error of it being made in a newer version of storyline, even though she never opened the file or updated it during the time in between (and no one opened those files during that time either).

Hi Mica,

You mentioned it wasn't opened by others - are you all sharing these files on a network or USB drive? That is also known to cause corruption errors due to latency associated with network or shared drives. Another thought would be if she had upgraded to a new update of Storyline 1 - we're currently on Update 10.   Is she able to open those files in SL2 now? I've never heard of them just updating on their own...so it would definitely be something we'd want to get our support team to take a look at and find out the exact set up and steps that she went through.
